One of the scariest things a woman can hear are the words, “You have invasive breast cancer” — cancer that has spread from where it began in the breast to surrounding normal tissue.
After the initial shock, you start thinking about treating the cancer as soon as possible and what this might entail. Chances are you’re also concerned about an altered appearance after breast surgery, and you’re not alone. Participants in a 2016 National Institutes of Health study confirmed something what we, as women, have known and feel — that the breast is not only an organ with a function but also a symbol to which many meanings are attached, including feminine identity.
Breast Reconstruction Options
Thankfully, women undergoing breast cancer surgery today, whether a mastectomy or lumpectomy, usually have the option of breast reconstruction. For Dr. Correa, an award-winning, board-certified plastic surgeon and the founder of The Woodlands Plastic Surgery & MedSpa, breast reconstruction isn’t just a procedure but a passion.
“It’s deeply gratifying to me to help women with breast cancer in such a fundamental way and to help give them a better quality of life and body image,” Dr. Correa says.
Breast reconstruction is a consistent part of his practice, giving him the experience you should look for in a reconstructive plastic surgeon.
“Women want to feel and look normal after breast cancer surgery, and they have options today. We’ll discuss reconstruction with implants or with their own tissue — the DIEP flap. This natural breast reconstruction procedure uses skin and tissue from the lower abdomen to recreate the breast. Patients also like the tummy tuck-like effect it can create.”
Dr. Correa explains that women who undergo lumpectomy are often candidates for an oncoplastic reconstruction, typically involving breast lift or reduction techniques. This is often a silver lining to the breast cancer journey.
An Experienced Team
Dr. Correa has been working closely with breast surgeon Diana Hook, MD since she began practicing in The Woodlands. Dr. Hook, a native Texan, completed a fellowship in breast surgical oncology at the prestigious Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.
“Oncoplastic surgery is a newer technique where the breast cancer is removed and then immediately followed with reconstructive surgery,” she explains. “I’ve been teaming with Dr. Correa for some time. We have a great synergy, and he’s wonderful to work with. Not only is he a great plastic surgeon, but he’s also a fantastic dad and person.”
Dr. Correa emphasizes the importance of the team aspect when it comes to oncoplastic surgery. “Dr. Hook and I work incredibly well together. We have the experience as a team to help deliver the best surgical outcomes,” he shares.
