Springtime is a tanning salon’s best season. People flock there in droves, buying tanning bed memberships, in the hopes of developing a golden summer glow in time to pull out their sleeveless dresses, tanks, shorts, and swimwear. This annual scenario makes dermatologists cringe. They know that rates of skin cancer cases in America are on the rise, and this includes the most deadly form: melanoma. They also know the ugly truth behind tanning bed use.

A particularly troubling statistic reveals that melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25 to 29 years old and the second most common form of cancer for young people 15 to 29 years old. “The demographic for skin cancer cases is definitely changing, and this rise is directly linked to tanning bed use,” said Dr. Mandy Warthan, board-certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist at Warthan Dermatology. “In our office alone, we have definitely seen an increase in younger patients with cancer just over the past year.”

Skin Cancer on the Rise

Think skin cancer is only found in elderly patients? Think again. Recent studies show that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer over the course of a lifetime, making it the most common form of cancer in America. Recent findings state that 1 in 26 men and 1 in 32 women will be diagnosed with melanoma during their lifetime—a drastic increase from just a few years ago.

“Luckily, most cases can be cured if detected early,” said Dr. Molly Warthan, board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon. These doctor sisters of Warthan Dermatology in McKinney invite you to come visit and let them check your spots.

Skin Cancer Dream Team

Drs. Mandy Warthan and Molly Warthan are the only sisters in the country practicing together as both a dermatopathologist, which is Dr. Mandy Warthan’s specialty, and a Mohs micrographic skin cancer surgeon, which is Dr. Molly Warthan’s specialty. “Our patients tell us all the time how much they really appreciate that we are a one-stop shop where they can have all their dermatologic needs addressed—from a skin cancer screening, to biopsy results, to surgery—in one office,” said Dr. Mandy Warthan.

Additionally, Warthan Dermatology Center is pleased to offer photodynamic therapy for actinic keratosis (precancerous growths) and is one of just a handful of dermatology practices in the Metroplex—and the only one in McKinney—with the technology. An in-house pathology lab rounds out the comprehensive care for skin cancer patients, allowing for fast and accurate biopsy results.

Meet the Doctors

Mandy Warthan, M.D.—Dr. Mandy Warthan is double board-certified in dermatology and dermatopathology; fewer than three percent of dermatologists become dermatopathologists. This demanding discipline is focused on the microscopic diagnosis of skin cancers, moles, and other complex skin diseases. Dr. Warthan grew up in Nacogdoches, Texas, in a medical family; both her father and sister are also dermatologists. Dr. Warthan has published extensively in academic journals and has been quoted in the New York Times. She is respected by her peers as an accomplished dermatologist with genuine empathy for her patients. Dr. Warthan is highly trained in the latest developments in aesthetic dermatology, as well as the prevention and treatment of skin cancer and other diseases.

Molly Warthan, M.D.—Dr. Molly M. Warthan is a board-certified dermatologist who grew up in Nacogdoches, Texas. Her father and sister are also both dermatologists. Dr. Warthan pioneered the research that determined that many individuals can become physically addicted to tanning or being in the sun. She received worldwide recognition for this research, appearing on the NBC TODAY show and numerous newspapers, including the New York Times and the Washington Post. Dr. Warthan specializes in Mohs micrographic skin cancer surgery. She is respected by her peers as a very excellent skin cancer surgeon and strives to provide the best possible dermatologic care for her patients.

Robert Marinaro, M.D.—Dr. Marinaro is a board-certified dermatologist. Before moving to Texas in 2012, Dr. Marinaro opened and managed his own private practice in New Jersey for 25 years. He was the first dermatologic laser surgeon in Morris County, New Jersey, and was the co-founder of one of the first vein treatment centers in New Jersey. Dr. Marinaro is dedicated to both the science and art of dermatology. He provides the most current and effective treatments in medical, surgical, and cosmetic procedures to patients of all ages. Treating patients with compassion and personalized attention is rewarding to him, and he feels fortunate to be in a field of medicine that he enjoys so immensely.
