Meet Periodontist Stephen Walker

BY MEREDITH KNIGHT

When Stephen Walker is asked, “So, what do you do?” and answers he’s a periodontist, it’s not uncommon for him to receive a blank stare in response. It’s alright. He’s used to it. But for Dr. Walker, this little-known specialty has been the perfect career. “I chose dentistry because it’s based in science, but I also get to work with my hands,” he said. “Then there’s the personal aspect, developing relationships with my patients. I put in the extra years of schooling to become a periodontist, because it perfectly combines science, art, and healthcare into one career, and it really allows me to make a difference in my patients’ health.” Dr. Walker also enjoys the educational aspect of periodontics, empowering his patients to become their own best oral health advocates.

Periodontics Defined

According to the American Academy of Periodontics, “A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease (a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth, also known as gum disease), and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists receive extensive training in both of these areas and more, including three additional years of education beyond dental school.”

Emerging Science

Gum disease treatment has taken on more importance than ever, as links are being established between bacteria in the mouth, caused by untreated gum disease, and health concerns all over the body. In fact, untreated gum disease may increase your risk of stroke, diabetes, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and dementia and has been linked to problems in pregnancy, as well.

“When bacteria are present in the mouth, they can enter the body, every time you swallow, where they can negatively affect all the systems of the body,” Dr. Walker said. “The good news is seeing a periodontist to treat your gum disease can improve your overall health and help reduce your risk of developing any of these conditions.”

The Art and Science of Dental Implants

When someone loses a tooth, tooth restoration needs to not only be strong and functional, but also look natural and blend perfectly with surrounding teeth. Dental implants from Walker Periodontics & Implant Dentistry are permanent replacement teeth that anchor securely to the jawbone where they look and function just like natural teeth. Dr. Walker has successfully placed thousands of dental implants, restoring the look and function of his patients’ teeth.

Patient Satisfaction

Many people find their way to Walker Periodontics because they’ve been referred by their general dentist. It was that way for Daryl H., who gave Dr. Walker and his team one of many five-star reviews. Daryl said, “I had a gum surgery on a back molar in January 2021. From the first consultation to all my follow-up visits, the patient services have been outstanding. The staff are all so friendly, and the patient care staff are so nice. Dr. Walker put me at ease instantly. He had a plan and explained it thoroughly. Day of surgery was a breeze. I don’t really remember much, but I definitely remember the chocolate milkshake they had ready for me when I came out of surgery. That was amazing. Nice touch!”

Patient Empowerment

Dr. Walker believes an informed patient will be a successful patient. That’s why he takes time sitting with each patient and explaining what to expect during and after their procedure. He explains not just what the patient needs to do following their procedure but why.

In another five-star review, Laurel P. has this to say, “The entire team is friendly and personable. They seemed to predict my questions before I asked them, and made the entire process of consultation, scheduling, insurance/payment, procedure, and follow-up seamless and easy. Plus, I had zero pain during and after my surgery. Zero. Dr. Walker does such a nice job and provides such good post-op instructions that if you follow them, it will be a piece of cake.”
