Stephen Walker, D.D.S., M.S., decided to pursue a career in dentistry and periodontics after obtaining a business degree and then realizing he just wasn’t fulfilled with his life direction. Wanting to do something that put him closer to helping people one-on-one and, considering the fact that his father was a physician, Walker said dentistry was his obvious choice. So he decided to forge out on his own while at the same time utilizing his knowledge of science in his father’s footsteps as well.
“Being a dentist allows me the opportunity to really make a difference,” Walker said, and that difference includes the fact that he makes happy patients every day as they leave his office smiling after the results of his work. “I love that I have a profound effect on people’s lives and the quality of their life, which I give back to them so they are able to live without pain.”
A first-generation Texan, Walker grew up in Las Colinas and now offices in Coppell. He jokingly added that he is the only one in his family who likes barbeque and football, but he is proud of it.
A Diplomate of the American Academy of Periodontology, he attended Baylor College of Dentistry for his dental training and, while at Baylor, he was a member of the Odontological Honors Society and was selected to receive the Oral Biology Award and Merritt-Parks Award in Periodontics. After earning his D.D.S. degree, Dr. Walker continued his education in Periodontics at Baylor College of Dentistry and, at the end of his three-year residency, he received his certificate in periodontology and Masters of Science degree.
He decided to specialize in order to focus his skills and become an authority in that field, but he likes that, at the same time, his specialization also allows him to maintain relationships with his patients while being part of a dental team that has the patient’s best interests in mind.
During his periodontal residency, Walker served as chief resident and conducted research analyzing the bone response to a new implant surface. Recently, his research was published in the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implant.
Services offered at Walker Periodontics and Implant Dentistry include:
- Placement of dental implants including All-on-Four (replacing all teeth with implants)
- 3-D scans
- Bone grafting (if necessary) in preparation for dental implants
- Soft tissue grafts for covering exposed roots
- Treatment of gum disease, bleeding gums
- Deep cleanings and regular cleanings
A Unique Practice
Thriving on the fact that his practice is unique because of the level of exceptional customer service, Walker added, “We provide a comfortable, relaxing office environment with a friendly and experienced staff where each patient is unique and deserves a service tailored to their needs. One important piece of this is very clear communication with the referring dentist and the patient.”
When assembling his practice’s team, he took the task very seriously, explaining that experience with dental implants, working with insurance companies, communication with referring offices and, most importantly, customer service was key. “One thing that has surprised me is the synergistic interactions between my staff that allows them to anticipate patient needs,” he said.
About a year ago, Dr. Walker’s office also added a 3-D scanner to the practice. This technology has revolutionized the way he now practices since the three-dimensional computer images allow him to perform the surgery within the software before he ever steps foot into the surgical suite.
Being available to his patients 24/7, Dr.Walker said it is of utmost importance that his patients know that if they have any questions or concerns they can talk to him personally about it at anytime.
It is also important to him to help his patients overcome dentistry problems financially “In this day and age, dental implants are expensive,” he said. To that end, Walker Periodontics and Implant Dentistry offer several different financing options and works with the patient’s insurance carriers in order to maximize their benefits.
Working with several physicians in the area to take care of people who cannot afford treatment, Dr. Walker is also involved with several dental societies with yearly events that provide emergency dental treatment free of charge. That coupled with the fact that he said, “I love hearing that I have alleviated a patients anxiety about dental surgery and that they referred their friends and family to see me.” Dr. Walker would love to hear from you too.
