Galveston College

Advancing People's Lives Through Lifelong Learning

Galveston College was founded in 1967 and is a comprehensive community college providing the residents of Galveston Island and the surrounding region with academic, workforce development, continuing education and community service programs.  The Galveston College Foundation exists to support and enhance the ability of Galveston College to achieve its mission of advancing people’s lives through lifelong learning.

The College offers a wide variety of academic and career pathways, some of which can be completed in less than a year. In addition, Galveston College offers more than 50 certificate and associate degree programs that prepare students to transfer to a four-year university. The accredited College serves an ethnically diverse population of approximately 2,400 students each semester in credit programs and nearly 5,000 individuals annually in continuing education programs.

Galveston College has proven to be a progressive, dynamic institution of higher education known for its partnerships with businesses and organizations and its commitment to provide a quality learning environment that is student focused. Its programs have consistently gained local, state and national acclaim in areas that include health care programs, workforce development initiatives, NJCAA athletics, innovative fundraising, culinary arts and special student services.

In August, Galveston College announced a $5 million leadership grant from the Moody Foundation toward the College’s Building Tomorrow capital campaign. The gift will support Galveston College’s new Health Sciences Education Center, which broke ground in June 2022.

“The new 64,000-square-foot Health Sciences Education Center will house Galveston College’s Allied Health and Nursing programs, including its new Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, which will welcome its first cohort in fall 2022,” said Dr. Myles Shelton, Galveston College president. “The new Health Sciences Education Center will benefit students’ learning experience, and the community will see positive results as highly-trained health care graduates enter the local and regional workforce.”

Galveston College’s current health care programs include Nursing, Computerized Tomography (CT), Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Nuclear Medicine Technology, Radiation Therapy, Radiography, Surgical Technology, Diagnostic Medical Sonography and Healthcare Management.

“We’re honored to support this important addition to Galveston College and to serve the evolving educational needs of our community,” said Ross Moody, trustee of the Moody Foundation. “The Moody Foundation has proudly supported Galveston College projects and scholarships since its founding, and this latest grant will provide tremendous health sciences opportunities for the next generation of students.”

Construction on the new three-story academic building is underway on the Galveston College main campus at the corner of Avenue Q and 39th Street and is projected to be complete in the fall of 2023.

“On behalf of the Galveston College Foundation, I want to thank the Moody Foundation and its trustees for this generous grant. The Galveston College Foundation has a long-standing partnership with the Moody Foundation. With this new gift, we once again express our appreciation for the Moody Foundation’s investment in education,” said Galveston College Foundation Board Chair, Keith McFatridge. “The grant is structured to be split between the bricks and mortar cost of the new building, and the creation of an endowment will support the operation of the new building once it opens. This gift makes evident a long-term commitment to Galveston students, and we are grateful for the intentional thought that was put into this gift.”
