Every year in this country, hundreds of thousands of healthy babies are born with the help, support, and guidance of a certified nurse midwife (CNM). Some of those glorious creatures are born right here in McKinney with the assistance of an Adriatica Women’s Health midwife. Because midwives specialize in low-risk pregnancies, that partnership begins with education and guidance to empower expectant women to make optimum health choices throughout their pregnancy and delivery.
Adriatica offers three experienced certified nurse midwives, Liz Marley, Courtney Watson, and recently welcomed Holly Costello. As midwives, they’re able to spend a lot of time with their patients, enabling them to get to know patients and patients to know them, thoroughly answering questions, and offering explanations on what’s happening and what to expect. And they’re there to labor with each mom—acting not as a director but a partner in the delivery.
Moms looking for a natural childbirth experience are reassured that midwives, in general, have much lower intervention rates, fewer C-sections, fewer episiotomies, fewer inductions, and more vaginal births and successful VBAC’s (vaginal birth following a cesarean). Although the CNMs at Adriatica Women’s Health can prescribe medication when needed, they offer many more tools for helping moms cope with pregnancy and labor that don’t involve medications, allowing pregnancy and delivery to proceed normally and naturally.
From the beginning of your pregnancy, The Midwives of Adriatica Women’s Health OB-GYN invite you to take an active role in your care, teaching you to trust your own instincts and helping support you and the decisions you make. When it’s time to labor, they labor with you, offering options such as laboring in the shower or on your hands and knees, honoring your choices and preferences.
Adriatica Women’s Health OB-GYN also offers CenteringPregnancy, a community approach to prenatal care that supports and empowers women before, during, and after pregnancy. CenteringPregnancy is all about new moms and moms-to-be freely sharing their knowledge and experiences and learning from one another. This model has replaced most “traditional” prenatal appointments, offering patients timely appointments with no waiting and more quality one-on-one time with their provider. CenteringPregnancy appointments last 90 to 120 minutes, providing you time to learn what your body is going through, what to expect, and how to prepare for delivery.
An Adriatica certified nurse midwife leads each CenteringPregnancy appointment offering patients—in groups of four to ten women due around the same time—tips on self-care including how to measure your weight and blood pressure, an open, trusted forum to ask questions, compare notes, and get expert and peer advice on nutrition, exercise, labor, breastfeeding, infant care, and more. It’s just one more way Adriatica Women’s Health is supporting and empowering women and families.
