Ikram Kureshi, MD
Harvard-trained, board-certified weight-loss surgeon Ikram Kureshi, really has the best of both worlds. He’s fulfilling his life’s ambition of caring for people through the latest, most advanced surgical technology, but he’s also enjoying lifelong relationships with his patients. “I love the technical aspect of my job but what I love most is to see patients come in with obesity-related health problems and watch those problems disappear with weight loss surgery,” he said.
After 12 years and thousands of successful weight loss surgeries, it’s clear those patient relationships are his favorite part of the job. “I’m able to see people go from being unhealthy to healthy, from no energy to vitality,” he said. “I meet someone who’s suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and other obesity-related illnesses, taking a medicine cabinet full of prescriptions, then I’m able to watch them regain their health as they lose weight, improve their relationships and job performance, and get off many—sometimes all—of their medications. During this journey, my patients become like family to me.”

During this journey, my patients become like family to me.”
Dr. Kureshi becomes like family to them, as well, often meeting their spouses, parents, siblings, and children and inviting them to be part of the process. “One reason I see my patients for life is to make sure, even after they lose their excess weight, they’re sticking to good eating habits, exercising, and continuing to do all the right things,” he said. “Family is a big part of this process. Weight loss surgery is just one tool in their new wellness lifestyle. We want to partner with them—and their families—to empower them to do all they need to do to live a long, vibrant life.”
It’s not uncommon for one or more of those family members to decide they want to make a change for the better, too. “I often wind up doing surgery on several members in one family once they see their loved one losing weight and getting other health concerns under control, getting off their medication, et cetera,” he said. Dr. Kureshi never grows tired of taking this journey with his patients, watching them regain their health and say “good-bye” to obesity-related health problems.
Dr. Kureshi has expanded his practice to doing surgery in Mckinney but will continue to perform surgery in the Texoma region of Sherman, Texas and Durant, Oklahoma. He performs all types of weight loss surgery including revisions of previous failed weight loss procedures. He’s also robotically trained and does a large percentage of his surgeries robotically using the DaVinci Surgical System, which is typically less invasive than other surgical techniques. When asked about his practice philosophy, Dr. Kureshi didn’t hesitate. “Service with a smile,” he said. “And the patient always comes first.”
