How far would you go for the smile of your dreams? Patients of Dr. Guy M. Lewis happily travel to Houston from around the globe to seek his expertise in smile design. For over 38 years, Dr. Lewis has excelled at the art and science of building beautiful, natural-looking, fully functioning smiles. It’s his life’s work and passion. Whether addressing a subtle shift in a smile’s aesthetic or completing a complex, full mouth makeover, Dr. Lewis’ meticulous diagnostic approach, innovative service, elegant facilities, and artesian level define the standard for excellence in Texas — and far beyond.
This passion for show-stopping smiles began at a young age when, in 7th grade, his aunt extolled to him the rewards she found in her own dental career. Once in dental school though, he wasn’t taught much about cosmetic dentistry. It would require his own research to uncover all that was being done and learned about creating smiles. “I had to learn from those developing new cosmetic products and procedures.” He said. “It required extensive post-doctoral work on my part. But for me, it was exciting to be on the leading edge of the dawn of cosmetic dentistry. I was able to be a pioneer in many of the cosmetic dentistry and full mouth rehabilitation techniques and services that are becoming a standard of care today.” Dr. Lewis has even developed his own brand of no-prep veneers.
Cosmetic Dentistry Defined
What exactly is cosmetic dentistry? “Think of it as complete smile rehab,” Dr. Lewis said. “Orthodontics, like braces, moves teeth around, while cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving the overall appearance of a patient’s mouth, teeth, gums, and smile. One of the first things people notice about you is your smile. A beautiful smile can boost your confidence and bolster your career and relationships. Porcelain veneers are commonly used in the smile design process. Veneers are placed over the front of the tooth to transform the shape of natural teeth to create an ideal smile. Veneers are custom designed for each individual patient and can fill in gaps or spaces, make small teeth appear larger, and, of course, whiten and brighten your teeth. Other common cosmetic dentistry procedures include teeth whitening, gum contouring, bonding, and crowns.” Dr. Lewis focuses on partial to full-mouth smile restoration with precisely tailored crowns and veneers made of the finest materials.
Having led the cosmetic dentistry industry for over three decades, Dr. Lewis has been an eyewitness and participant in a revolution of innovation. “When I graduated from dental school 37 years ago, cosmetic dentistry was just emerging as a new field, but I immediately saw its value. I was honored to be a founding and accredited member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, to be able to help set the standard for what patients should expect from their cosmetic dentists going forward. Cosmetic dentistry defers from traditional dentistry in many ways, but when I opened my practice in 1985, the field was so new there wasn’t yet a certification process for cosmetic dentistry. Now, candidates are evaluated by the American Board of Cosmetic Dentistry and must meet specific criteria before becoming accredited in cosmetic dentistry.” Dr. Lewis said. “I was the youngest dentist to become accredited and I feel like that offers my patients peace of mind before undergoing any type of cosmetic dentistry procedure. Whatever their reason for seeking a smile makeover, they want to know they’re in the right — experienced — hands.”
That experience — 38 years of it — offers Dr. Lewis the knowledge to think outside the box and develop individualized solutions for each of his patients. “Cosmetic dentistry isn’t a cookie-cutter operation,” he said. “You really can’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. I see many patients who’ve been told by other dentists that nothing can be done to help them improve their smile or who recommend extensive, invasive treatment instead of taking a conservative approach. It’s just a matter of lack of experience. If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Over three decades, I’ve been able to develop an entire toolbox of options for my patients. I also developed the No-Prep G. Lewis veneers, which are about as thin as a contact lens and fit over your natural teeth without having to remove any natural tooth structure and are individually custom-made by my highly skilled lab technician. They are extremely beautiful, not bulky, and there is no need to grind down your natural tooth-hence ‘no-prep’.” To date, Dr. Lewis has offered his no-prep veneers to thousands of patients with spectacular results.
