Dr. Jeremy Parcells spends his days changing lives for the better. “Who wouldn’t want to do that for a living,” he asked. His interest in medicine began in high school, when he was given the opportunity to observe surgery. “At that second I set my heart on becoming a surgeon,” he said. But it wasn’t until his surgical training that he recognized the potential for bariatric surgery to restore health and change lives. He was hooked!
Bariatric weight-loss procedures include gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, duodenal switch and intragastric balloons can be the first step for many patients to a life free of obesity and obesity-related conditions. “It gives me joy to provide immediate solutions to my patients’ healthcare concerns; to see the results of my education and hard work and to know it’s improving someone’s day-to-day life,” he said.
Dr. Parcells performs a wide range of procedures including hernia repair, gallbladder, anti-reflux, colorectal, and a full range of complex laparoscopic and robotic surgeries performed through a much smaller incision and resulting in shorter recovery times, less risk of infection, less scarring, less pain, and improved outcomes for his patients.
Dr. Parcells is the highest-volume robotic surgeon in Tarrant County, extensively trained in the da Vinci Surgical System, offering his patients at Surgical Associates of Mansfield a whole new level of robotic surgery precision, as the system affords him a magnified, high-definition view of the operation and translates the tiniest movements of his hands into movements of surgical instruments at the site.
“Where traditional open colon surgery meant a seven to 10-day hospital stay and laparoscopic surgery brought that down to four or five days, with da Vinci robotic surgery, my patients are routinely going home one or two days after surgery, with even better results,” he said.
Dr. Parcells graduated summa cum laude from Wheaton College and obtained his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine. He completed an internship in general surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, a residency at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, and a fellowship in minimally-invasive and bariatric surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
He and his wife, Carolyn, a local pediatrician who specializes in adolescent medicine, live in South Arlington with their two boys where they enjoy getting outside and going to Rangers games. Dr. Parcells is honored to have been chosen 2017 Best Bariatric Surgeon and to see Surgical Associates of Mansfield chosen 2017 Best Surgery Group.
