After years as a board-certified general surgeon, Gary Alexander is still fascinated by the human body; mainly in its ability to repair itself. And he’s in awe every day that God and his patients allow him to be part of that process. “I’ve always loved putting things back together,” he said. “I knew at a young age I’d either be an engineer or a surgeon. I couldn’t be happier with the choice I made.”
A big proponent of patient education and empowerment, Dr. Alexander sees a vital part of his job as helping patients understand their viable treatment options. “If there’s a non-invasive treatment option that would work better than a surgical procedure, we encourage our patients to explore it and do everything we can to point them in the most conservative direction we think will work for them.”
However, when a surgical procedure is the best option, Dr. Alexander’s patients can rest assured they’ll receive the best care possible at the Surgical Associates of Mansfield, the largest robotic surgery practice in the area, which offers a wide range of minimally-invasive surgeries. Dr. Alexander and his associates are not afraid to tackle complex cases, as they take pains to ensure each procedure is as minimally-invasive as possible.
With his background in computers, Dr. Alexander has trained extensively in all applications of the da Vinci robotic platform, which works in real time translating the surgeon’s hand movements into precise micro-movements of the instruments at the surgical site, allowing Dr. Alexander to perform major surgery through the smallest of incisions. For his patients, this means less pain, shorter recovery, less risk of infection, less trauma to surrounding tissue, less scarring, and better potential outcomes. “His aim every day is to provide top-notch medical care through timely screening and conservative surgical intervention of treatable diseases,” he said.
Dr. Alexander attended the University of Texas Medical School at Houston after completing his undergraduate degree in physics at the University of Dallas. Married to a fellow physician, he is Daddy to a precious baby girl whom the couple is happy to be raising in Mansfield. When not on the job, he enjoys tinkering with electronics and other gadgets, writing and drawing, and cheering on local sports team, especially baseball.
