When Dr. Alisa Reed decided to add another dentist to her practice last year, she was thrilled Dr. Stacey Smith agreed to join the team. She knew Dr. Smith as one of The Woodlands’ most personable and highly skilled dentists who puts patients first and that she would fit perfectly into Dental Designs by Alisa Reed.

Today it doesn’t seem out of place to come across a practice with two or more female dentists. But not that long ago, it was different, and women like Drs. Reed and Smith continue to pioneer the way for women entering the field.

“The number of female dentists has grown from 16% in 2001 to around 34%, and I’m so thankful for the women in dentistry that offer encouragement and support for one another,” Dr. Smith says. “I see myself, Dr. Reed, and other female dentists as ambassadors for women in dentistry. We’re diverse, share knowledge, and value one another’s perspectives. Through this, we all grow and evolve.”

Dr. Smith further points out that women make fantastic dentists. “We typically have a nurturing, gentle manner and a naturally comforting, compassionate side which helps put patients at ease and build trust.”

Looking to the future, Dr. Smith expects more women to become dentists, especially specialists. “I also believe women will begin to focus more on the business side of dentistry as well as the clinical side,” she adds.

Empowering Patients with Knowledge

Another aspect of dentistry that continues to change is the philosophy of care.

“Even in the 10 years I’ve been practicing, the approach to patient care has evolved. More patients are reading information online. They ask lots of great questions and have acquired a good deal of information, but we also have to remember there’s a lot of misleading information out there, too,” Dr. Smith explains. “We actively listen and strive to understand where our patients are coming from, then empower them with knowledge and review options so they can make informed decisions.”

Dr. Smith says patients want choices, and she discusses alternative treatments with those interested, such as essential oil rinses versus using fluoride rinses. “My role is to sort fact from fiction for my patients so they can make safe, healthy decisions about their smile and oral health.”

She also points out that DIY trends in dentistry and online products such as mail order trays for clear orthodontics should be discussed with your dentist before using them. “You can end up harming your bite or promoting gum disease. Talk with your dentist first about the safety of these services and ask about the potential hazards as well as the benefits.”

Comfortable, Advanced Dentistry

Technological change is occurring in dentistry at a rapid pace, just as it is in our daily lives. Drs. Reed and Smith stay up-to-date on the latest advances, from technology to techniques and materials. Many breakthroughs not only improve the delivery and efficacy of dental care but also add convenience and comfort for the patient.

If she could choose one myth to debunk about dentistry, Dr. Smith says it’s the notion that dental work is painful. “We love showing anxious new patients how comfortable modern dentistry can be. Coming to see us isn’t a trip to the Bates Motel!”

Patients feel their fears melt away as they discover how the entire team goes above and beyond to help ensure their dental experience is comfortable. It’s no wonder one of Dr. Smith’s patients wrote this glowing review. “This was the best dentist experience I ever had! If you are like me and afraid of going to the dentist, you don’t have to look for a dentist anymore. This is the place you should go. Dr. Smith … went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable and offer first-class care.”

Dr. Smith primarily sees patients at the Panther Creek location, spending one day a week at the medical plaza location.

“The Panther Creek office is a great place for patients and the dental team, too,” says Dr. Smith. “There’s genuine camaraderie among team members, and the atmosphere is naturally light-hearted and welcoming while remaining professional. It’s not uncommon to hear us laughing with our patients who enjoy coming to see us as much as we enjoy seeing them.”

Prevention and Good Oral Health

Drs. Reed and Smith provide comprehensive services, including cosmetic and restorative dentistry. Still, their primary goal is to help you preserve your natural teeth and keep your smile as healthy as it is beautiful.

“There’s a saying, healthy mouth, healthy body, and it’s true — the mouth is a window into the health of the body,” Dr. Smith says. She notes that research indicates people with gum disease have two to three times the risk of having a heart attack, stroke, or other serious cardiovascular events. Additionally, there’s a two-way relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease.

“Dentists have known for a long time that our health is linked to overall health. Now, with this vital information becoming mainstream knowledge, patients view dentists not only as people who make their smiles look gorgeous and fill cavities but as healthcare providers,” Dr. Smith explains.
