The leading spine surgeons in the Metroplex are found at Spine Physicians Institute, where the team spends their days helping patients get the spring back in their step so they may live happier healthier lives. Founded by Mayo Clinic-trained Dallas spine surgeon Dr. Venkat Sethuraman, the practice provides the best in class spine care for all their patients. Their goal is to implement the best possible treatment plan so that each patient can get back to living life to its fullest. The doctors at Spine Physicians Institute accomplish this by incorporating their vast knowledge and commitment of excellence in surgical skill, along with the appropriate methodologies and state-of-the-art techniques suited to each patient’s specific injuries or physical trauma.
FROM CHRONIC PAIN TO RUNNING MARATHONS
One example is Kim Truman of Dallas, celebrity trainer, fitness journalist, and founder of Kim Truman Fitness. Coming from a soccer and professional dance background, Kim was determined to wait and find the right doctor who would help end years of severe chronic neck pain and numbness and weakness in her arms and shoulders. This nerve damage resulted from severe spinal stenosis caused from a soccer injury. She found that doctor in Venkat Sethuraman, M.D., who was voted Best Spine Surgeon 2014 by the readers of Las Colinas/Coppell Living Magazine.
In Kim’s words:
“Imagine a medical professional who allocates ample time to see you. One who is highly educated and experienced but is caring enough to take the time to listen, answer all your questions or concerns and explain all treatment options in patient terms. Imagine a doctor’s office where every member of his medical team and staff is also as committed to providing a caring and positive atmosphere for their patients. Imagine no more because this is a description of Dallas, Texas’ finest—Dr.Sethuraman and his medical team!”
Kim said she researched doctors in Los Angeles, Houston and Dallas before selecting Spine Physicians Institute. “My first time meeting Dr. Seth, I instinctively knew I would be in great hands because of his surgical technique and the confidence in his expertise!” she said, adding that Dr. Seth did not lead her blindly into surgery but took time to cover every aspect of the procedure, hospital stay and post-op recovery.
“Not only did I feel confident in my decision to undergo surgery with Dr. Seth, but he took extra time to make my family feel comfortable. Dr. Seth and his wife, Dr. Shahid, were there before surgery, during surgery, and while I was in recovery, also updating my family with information on my status during the actual surgery to keep them informed and comfortable. Dr. Seth and his medical team are beyond incredible!”
Now Kim runs marathons and also runs a successful fitness business as a personal trainer and leader of group exercise. Her clients include professional athletes, tri-athletes, endurance athletes, collegiate sport teams, weekend warriors and neighborhood housewives, illustrating the fact that Spine Physicians Institute can indeed put the spring back in one’s step.
CERVICAL DISC DISEASE, CERVICAL MYELOPATHY AND TREATMENT OPTIONS
Two of the conditions that Kim suffered from, like millions of other Americans, were cervical disc disease and cervical myelopathy. Years of dancing and sports took their toll, resulting in neck pain and numbness and weakness in her shoulders and arms.
Cervical myelopathy is a spectrum of conditions that refers to impaired function of the spinal cord, usually caused by degeneration of the discs of the cervical spine along with the facet joints. Cervical spondylotic (arthritis) myelopathy is the most common disorder causing dysfunction of the spinal cord in the United States, and the team at Spine Physicians Institute has extensive experience in treating this condition.
Nonsurgical options are possible if the patient presents with mild myelopathy that does not appear to be progressing, but if a patient appears to be suffering from severe cord compression on imaging, demonstrates significant weakness either in the arms and or the legs, or has bowel or bladder incontinence, proceeding directly to surgery may be advised in order to give the patient the best chance of recovering. The objective of surgery is to relieve compression on the spinal cord, which can be achieved by a number of minimally invasive options offered by Spine Physicians Institute.
- Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery
- Neck Pain
- Low Back Pain
- Spinal Stenosis
- Degenerative Spondylolisthesis
- Herniated Disc Treatment
- Whiplash Treatment
- Cervical Degenerative Disk Disease
- Cervical Radiculopathy
