Helping people isn’t just a career for Sharon Simmons Cantrell, it’s a family legacy. As a self-described “people person” and president, shareholder, and attorney at Simmons & Fletcher, P.C., listening, caring, and helping people is in her blood. This tradition was passed down by her uncle and the firm’s original founder, Robert S. Simmons. Although he passed away in 2020, his Christian law firm continues to hold to his high standards of care and expert service.
Simmons Cantrell says her favorite part about what she does is “making clients happy and knowing that I did something good.” After growing up in Houston, she attended Texas A&M and graduated in 1988 with a psychology major. “I did an internship with a psychologist and realized I couldn’t fix people,” she said. So, she pivoted. She worked over the summers with her uncle doing switchboard operating, filing, bookkeeping, and as a legal assistant then eventually, as a law clerk. She attended the University of Houston for law school, eventually working her way up in Simmons & Fletcher, P.C., in the litigation department, then pre-litigation.
Now, as the new owner of the firm, she’s focused on helping people and sharing her faith. “We are a Christian law firm, and we are never afraid to reach out to others, help them get to know Jesus, advertise about who we are, and draw people in to share the good news of Christianity.”
Her faith guides everything she does, but Sharon Simmons Cantrell is clear that her firm helps everyone, despite their background or religion. Still, she remains proud of continuing her uncle’s legacy by letting everyone know that Christianity is an important part of the firm.
“My faith, my family, and the firm are based in Christianity — in fact, we just got done with a Bible study,” she explained. “I’m proud of being a Christian, I’m proud of my three kids and husband, and I’m proud of us helping build the firm since my uncle’s passing, even during COVID-19 times. We’ve had to downsize, be more efficient, and utilize our space better.”
Her daily work includes negotiating cases, talking with clients, figuring out how to get cases settled or forwarding to the litigation department. Simmons & Fletcher, P.C. are personal injury lawyers, helping people involved in car accidents, slips and falls, work injuries, defective products, dog bites, wrongful deaths, medical malpractice, personal injury, and more. They provide legal services and beyond, including helping people access food banks and secure emergency funding.
In her free time, Sharon Simmons Cantrell enjoys playing the flute in church and proving that women attorneys can do anything.
“If someone says you can’t do something, go out and prove them wrong and do it,” Simmons Cantrell said. “When I was in college, someone’s mother told me I couldn’t be a lawyer, and it always stuck with me. People think a woman can’t do that, and we’ll prove them wrong.”
