Their team of board-certified physicians, with many years of experience at area trauma centers, is assisted by emergency-trained nurses with emergency room experience. “When you come in, you are greeted immediately and are typically seen within five to 10 minutes of arrival,” Dr. Luna-Gonzales said. “If necessary, we have transfer agreements with hospitals within the area for those patients that require surgical care or other interventions.
Dr. Luna-Gonzalez practically grew up in the world of medicine as the daughter of a physician, who took young Hortencia along with him while he made rounds at the hospital. She then started working there while still a student. Dr. Luna-Gonzales started her career as a pediatrician and subsequently chose emergency medicine after marrying her husband. “I like the lifestyle of an emergency physician,” she said of her career choice. “When you’re working, it can be very fast paced, but when you’re off, you can focus on family and friends. Most of all, I enjoy seeing a wide variety of patients—young and old—and being able to make a difference in their lives. We hear comments all the time about how patients love our caring staff.” That staff includes Drs. Robert Reyes, Suzanna Cruz, Victoria Alexander and Jim Miravite.
“At River Oaks Emergency Center, we’re able to provide emergency medicine in an environment that allows us to spend more time addressing our patients’ needs and attending to their families,” Dr. Luna-Gonzales said. She recalled the days she used to treat her neighbors when they were sick or injured “right on my kitchen table!” Her work at River Oaks Emergency Center isn’t that much different; she’s still taking care of her neighbors. “It’s important to me to live in the same community where I work.” She and her husband, Dr. Carlos A Gonzales, a pediatric ophthalmologist, have four sons, one of whom is in medical school.
