When Dr. Rakesh K. Mangal was in high school, he often assisted at his father’s veterinary clinic and was already familiar with the art of surgery. One day, someone brought in a severely injured pregnant cat. When young Rakesh discovered the animal’s owner wanted the animal put to sleep despite her unharmed babies, he suggested another option to his father. “Why don’t we transfer the embryos into another cat,” he said. After obtaining permission from the local humane society, the pregnant uterus was transplanted into another feline. While the embryos later died, exploratory surgery proved they had indeed grown inside the surrogate. An infertility surgeon was born.

Dr. Mangal graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans and later became the chief resident in obstetrics and gynecology at Ochsner Medical Institutions. Today he is one of the few doctors in the United States to complete fellowship training in both advanced reproductive laparoscopic and microscopic surgery through the Society of Reproductive Surgeons (SRS) as well as in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI). He specializes in the medical and surgical treatment for severe endometriosis, pelvic pain, large uterine fibroids, and infertility, including in vitro fertilization (IVF). Fertility doctors and general gynecologists from around the country and other parts of the world often refer their most complex surgical cases to him.

Many patients come to Dr. Mangal after repeated failed surgeries at other places. Some have already undergone a hysterectomy and been told they could not possibly still have endometriosis. In fact, the condition may have been the cause of continued pain and/or infertility. Dr. Mangal’s patients say he listens to them, never makes them feel rushed, and explains treatment options with honesty and compassion. They praise both his surgical skills and his empathic bedside manner.

If you have endometriosis, pelvic pain, large uterine fibroids or suffer from infertility, don’t wait to be treated. If your doctor has recommended a hysterectomy, but you are not ready to give up on the dream of having children, consider seeing Dr. Mangal first. There may still be hope. He will do all he can to restore a normal pelvic anatomy to help with the pain and preserve your fertility.
