It seems Jill Wisdom was destined for a career in podiatry. Her exposure to medicine of the feet and ankles began at the tender age of 15 months, when her aunt fell while carrying her resulting in a broken leg for Jill. As she grew, Jill proceeded to break her ankle while ice skating, foot while skateboarding, arm while roller skating and, the summer before sixth grade, a camp physical determined she had scoliosis. “I was in a brace throughout sixth and seventh grade then underwent back surgery in eighth grade,” she said. With each instance, Jill learned more about the career she’d eventually pursue. And her positive relationship with her doctor helped clinch the deal.
Now as a board-certified podiatrist, she spends her days helping other kids and their parents with any number of foot- and ankle-related issues. A mom of four girls and former student athlete herself, Jill spends a lot of time at the soccer field where she meets lots of other parents and their kids. “It’s great to meet other moms and kids, both in my professional life and at the ball field,” she said. “I find a lot of women prefer consulting a female doctor, for themselves and for their kids, especially for something as personal as their feet. Female doctors understand the cosmetic aspect, that women like their feet to look nice as well as feel nice. I also see a lot of kids with foot- and ankle-related issues due to gymnastics and other sports that can be hard on the bones.”
In practice 20 years, Dr. Wisdom has a unique how-I-became-a-mom story. “My husband and I knew we wanted a big family but, after years of trying, couldn’t seem to get pregnant,” she said. “After much prayer, we registered to adopt and God answered our prayers with four beautiful, healthy girls within an eight month period.”
She explained, “The agency asked if we were open to multiples, and then called us when triplet girls were available for adoption. We brought our beautiful girls home at 13 months and, three and a half weeks later, discovered we were pregnant with daughter number four.”
The girls are almost 10 and eight now. Dr. Jill and her husband, a counselor, divide parenting duties. “He’s home on the days I work and I’m home on the days he works,” she said. “So I’m able to have the best of both world.” When they’re not at work, she and her husband enjoy staying active at Preston Trails Community Church—where Dr. Jill serves in the nursery—spending time outdoors, snow skiing with their girls, and being with extended family.
