Members Say "Goodbye" To Basement Burnout

BY MEREDITH KNIGHT

Things are back in full swing at Orangetheory Fitness (OTF) and not a moment too soon. “Our members are so glad to be back,” said Orangetheory Fitness COO Kimberly Wesolowski. “A year and a half of working out at home — alone — in front of televisions and computers resulted in something called ‘basement burnout.’ People missed being in the gym. They missed the encouragement and socialization of the people they work out with. They missed having access to different fitness equipment and variety in their workouts. They missed the camaraderie and motivation they get from and give to each other. The atmosphere is charged right now because we’re all just so happy to be back.”

Orangetheory is a global fitness brand and boutique fitness studio franchise known for its results-driven and science-based full-body workouts. But to its members, it’s much more than that. “People start here thinking the vibe will be competitive,” Kimberly said. “They don’t want to be compared to the person next to them. But it’s not like that at all. We’re all at different fitness levels but we’re all cheering each other on. People have really missed that group support.”

Kimberly loves the community she sees at Orangetheory every day. “Whatever time of day you work out, you see the same people who prefer that time of day and friendships begin to form,” she said. “We have a group of moms who drop their kids off at school and just hang out — summer or winter — and visit before they work out together. We have young professionals who work out and then enjoy ‘no-shower happy hour’ hitting a local restaurant or bar for drinks before they head home. It’s all part of the Orangetheory experience and all part of overall fitness — body, mind, and spirit.” It was that way for member, Alison Ginn. “I’d done OTF once before, but got pregnant, had a baby, and you know how the story goes. I never fully committed to getting back,” she said. “Since my first trial class, I now attend four or five times a week. I’m hooked!” Alison has lost over 50 pounds and is reaching milestones with strength and fitness she didn’t believe possible. “The best part is the family I’ve met at OTF Prosper. The crew, coaches, and staff have become a staple in my life, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. OTF is part of who I am and, when I look in the mirror, I’m proud of the wife, mother, friend, and educator staring back at me.”

The website at Orangetheory.com explains that change like this, “Orangetheory is a heart-rate based, total-body group workout that combines science, coaching, and technology to guarantee maximum results from the inside out. It’s designed to charge your metabolism for more caloric after-burn, more results, and more confidence, all to deliver you more life. Orangetheory is more than a gym because the work you do in the studio will make all the difference out there in your world.”

Member Shea Mixon was 60 the first time she set foot in Orangetheory Fitness. “My younger sister had been attending OTF in Alabama and kept telling me I needed to go,” she said. “I finally broke down and went in January 2020 as a gift to her on her birthday. Little did I know that gift would be more for me than for her.” Shea signed up for the premier membership and started attending four times a week. Since that time, she has dropped 42 pounds and says she couldn’t have done it without the fabulous coaches and members at OTF Prosper.

“I thrive on a good challenge and good competition,” she said. “Since OTF is competing against yourself, it’s perfect for me to really push myself.” When COVID hit, Shea did her best to keep up using her own treadmill and elliptical bike. “Without the energy and encouragement from the OTF coaches and members though, I couldn’t keep myself motivated,” she said. Like so many other members, Shea is thrilled to be back at her local OTF living her best life under the orange lights.
