Receive Safe, Effective Treatment for a Variety of Conditions

Dr. Jean Louis Benae is a double board-certified neurosurgeon (by both the American Board of Neurological Surgery and the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgeons) with more than 10 years of neurosurgical experience. His intense, extensive training in the management of spine and brain disorders and injuries along with his commitment to excellence and professional experience have placed him at the forefront of neurological medicine.

New Location

Dr. Benae’s reputation is renowned. Patients travel from across the state, from around the U.S. and even from across the world seeking his expertise and relief from their pain at North Texas Brain & Spine Specialists. Now, with a second office opening at 722 Crawford Road in Argyle, his Denton County patients will have easier access to his unique and special approach to healing. Additionally, Dr. Benae is adding another cranial and spine surgeon to his staff.

About Dr. Benae

The demand for Dr. Benae’s kind of treatment is not surprising once you’ve gotten to know a little bit about him. Born in Cameroon and raised in Paris, France, he moved to California when he was only 20 years old to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he earned a degree in physiological sciences and graduated with honors. From there, he attended the David Geffen UCLA School of Medicine, where he obtained his Doctorate in Medicine.

During his graduate medical education, he became captivated by neuroscience, which led him to a neurotrauma research fellowship with the UCLA Brain Injury Research Center. Upon completion, Dr. Benae began his neurosurgery specialty training at the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals in Milwaukee.

Currently, Dr. Benae is double board-certified and a member of various distinguished national and international neurosurgical societies such as the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, North American Spine Society, and AO Spine.

Non-Invasive Treatment

His training and experience have resulted in a remarkable versatility with complex spine and minimally invasive spine surgery. Throughout his career, he has gained invaluable experience in the diagnosis and treatment of complex conditions, yet most of the patients who see Dr. Benae may never have surgery.

“The last thing I ever intend,” says Dr. Benae, “is to perform surgery on someone who doesn’t need surgery. My first intention is to locate the origin of a person’s problem, so that if surgery can be avoided, we can steer clear of it.”

North Texas Brain & Spine Specialists has always focused on providing the least invasive intervention first. Any treatment that doesn’t require surgery is considered non-invasive. Among these options are physical light therapy and light intervention pain management procedures. And even prior to engaging with minimally invasive treatments, Dr. Benae and his staff are sure to exhaust all non-surgical options first.

Minimally Invasive Treatment

“Our approach is constant,” said Benae. “We are committed to delivering safe, effective treatments for a wide variety of conditions, including the spine, the peripheral nervous system, and the brain. Whenever surgery is the preferred option, patients deserve to be oriented towards treatment modalities that optimize surgical outcomes proven with minimally invasive surgery, or robotics, or spinal navigation.”

While he will always pursue conservative, non-surgical methods of treatment first, you can be 100 percent certain that the doctors and staff at North Texas Brain and Spine Specialists have the skill and experience to perform an effective surgical procedure should that prove to be the best course of action.

“Any surgery is invasive,” Dr. Benae explains, “but our approach will minimize the impact, lesson the invasiveness, and maximize the benefit so that the patient will recover and return to full capacity quickly.”

Listening to patients is another foundational approach at North Texas Brain & Spine Specialists. Dr. Benae has learned from his work that what his patients initially need is someone who will listen to and really hear
their stories.

“When someone comes to see me,” said Dr. Benae, “often they have been suffering for years, so they need my time and my compassion. It’s important that I slow down and listen to what they have to say. Pain is scary and debilitating and can come from different sources, so I partner with my patients to investigate and find the source of that pain.”

In this way, Dr. Benae can make decisions about a plan of action that will not simply mask a person’s symptoms, but rather correct the problem.

Keeping the Practice Current

North Texas Brain & Spine Specialists is always adding the best and newest technology to their treatment options. Maintaining up-to-date and cutting-edge technology is something Dr. Benae implements and optimizes so that his patients leave with the least scarring and trauma and the best recovery. His techniques involve a combination of small incisions and minimal trauma to the surrounding tissues, so the patient heals faster, and there is less destruction surrounding the abnormality. Whereas in standard spine surgery everything is violated, with a minimally invasive approach, the tissue’s integrity is preserved.

By using the most current Konica Minolta digital X-rays, Dr. Benae provides the highest quality X-rays available, which are easily transferable to your primary care physicians or other specialists. And a new AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill means patients can reduce gravity’s impact from 20 to 100 percent of their body weight during rehabilitation. This means that patients with many neurological conditions can regain mobility and strength faster with less pain and discomfort.

Giving Back

Philanthropy is an active arm of the practice through an association with the Brain Project Africa Foundation. The staff travel to various parts of the world sharing their skills and medical advances with those who are less fortunate. While his primary focus is medicine, Dr. Benae’s work with this charitable organization is impactful, affecting various sectors of the African Healthcare Ecosystem. As well, they mentor young leaders in the medical field who will be able to address a myriad of issues that will in turn impact their communities.

In addition to the medical missions, he leads through the Brain Project, he stays active in his local community through participation in health fairs and free educational seminars.
