Robert Cloud MD is a board-certified colon and rectal surgeon with offices in Rockwall, Greenville, and Dallas. Dr. Cloud is a member of North Texas Colon and Rectal, an eight-physician group of board-certified colon and rectal surgeons who is affiliated with the Baylor Scott and White Health Texas Network. The group has a total of 225 years of combined experience in the field and specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the colon and rectum.
Typical colon and rectal diseases and problems handled by the group includes screening and diagnostic colonoscopy, diverticular disease, colon cancer, rectal cancer, Crohn’s disease, chronic ulcerative colitis, colonic volvulus, rectal bleeding, anal incontinence, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, anal abscess, anal fistula, anal fissure and pilonidal disease. Although the group handles all diseases of the colon and rectum, its major focus is on screening colonoscopy, prevention, diagnosis, and multi-disciplinary treatment of colon and rectal cancer.
Colon and rectal cancer is one of the top three cancers facing American men and women. The precancerous growth for colon and rectal cancer is an adenomatous polyp. All colon cancers come from these polyps, but all of these polyps don’t become cancers. “They estimate that it takes about five years for an adenomatous polyp to become a cancer,” says Dr. Robert Cloud. “During that time, there is typically little symptomatology to alert the patient that the polyp is there.”
Screening colonoscopy goes a long way in preventing colon and rectal cancer by removing these polyps before they become cancer. Current screening recommendations include: Average risk (no family history of colorectal cancer), age 50, and every ten years; high risk (family history of colorectal cancer or polyps), start at age 40 or 10 years prior to earliest case in the family, whichever is earlier.
When a patient is referred to Robert Cloud, MD, of North Texas Colon and Rectal with a diagnosis of colon and rectal cancer, the patient undergoes an initial consultation with Dr. Cloud and specialized staging studies are ordered. The patient’s pathological biopsy slides and all staging studies are then presented at a Colon and Rectal Cancer Multidisciplinary Conference, consisting of Dr. Cloud, other colorectal surgeons, radiation oncologists, chemo-oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists. A consensus regarding the best plan of treatment on every patient with colon and rectal cancer is reached by the assembled specialists. The patient then reconvenes with Dr. Cloud to discuss the treatment plan.
A diagnosis of colon and rectal cancer is a stressful time for a patient and his family. Dr. Cloud and North Texas Colon and Rectal provide the expertise and experience to ease the burden.
