Non-Surgical and Surgical Care

“We are committed to delivering safe, effective treatments for a wide variety of conditions, including the spine, the peripheral nervous system, and the brain.”
– Dr. Benae

Many details set Dr. Jean Louis Benae and North Texas Brain and Spine Specialists apart from others in the industry. He is an industry-leading double-board-certified neurosurgeon (by both the American Board of Neurological Surgery and the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgeons) who has over 10 years of neurosurgical experience.

He has undergone intense, extensive training in the management of spine and brain disorders and injuries. Throughout his career, Dr. Benae has gained invaluable experience in the diagnosis and treatment of complex conditions, yet most of his patients may never have surgery.

Non-invasive Treatment

“The last thing I want to do,” says Dr. Benae, “is to operate on someone who doesn’t need it. The foundation of my practice has always been to find the origin of a person’s problem.”

North Texas Brain and Spine Specialists focuses on providing the least-invasive intervention first. Any treatment that doesn’t require surgical intervention is considered non-invasive, such as physical therapy and light intervention pain-management procedures. Even before engaging with minimally invasive treatments, Dr. Benae and his staff explore all the non-surgical options.

Minimally Invasive Treatment

“Our philosophy has never changed,” said Dr. Benae. “We are committed to delivering safe, effective treatments for a wide variety of conditions, including the spine, the peripheral nervous system, and the brain. Whenever surgery is the preferred option, patients deserve to be oriented toward treatment modalities that optimize surgical outcomes proven with minimally invasive surgery, or robotics, or spinal navigation.”

While he will always pursue conservative, non-surgical methods of treatment first, you can be 100 percent certain that the doctors and staff at North Texas Brain and Spine Specialists have the skill and experience to perform an effective surgical procedure should that be the best course of action.

“Any surgical option is invasive,” explained Dr. Benae, “but we will minimize the impact and make it as least invasive possible. This makes the experience more beneficial for the patient’s recovery and return to full capacity. “

North Texas Brain and Spine Specialists offer the following services and procedures:

  • Minimally invasive spine surgery
  • Cervical decompression and fusion
  • Lumbar decompression and fusion
  • Spinal stabilization/trauma
  • Spine tumor
  • Thoracic decompression and fusion
  • Cervical disc replacement
  • Chiari
  • Brain and spine tumor resection

What’s New

“Our practice is always adding the newest technology for our patients,” said Dr. Benae.

Up-to-date and cutting-edge technology is something Dr. Benae implements and optimizes so that his patients leave with the least scarring and trauma and the best recovery. His techniques involve a combination of small incisions and minimal trauma to the surrounding tissues, so the patient heals faster, and there is less destruction surrounding the abnormality. Whereas in standard spine surgery, everything is violated, with Dr. Benae’s minimally invasive approach, the integrity of the tissue is preserved.

Thanks to the latest, cutting-edge Konica Minolta digital X-rays, Dr. Benae can provide the highest quality X-rays available, which are easily transferable to your primary care physician or other specialists. And a new AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill means patients can reduce gravity’s impact from 20 to 100 percent of their body weight during rehabilitation. This means that patients with many neurological conditions can regain mobility and strength faster with less pain and discomfort.

As well, North Texas Brain and Spine Specialists are expanding to include locations in Frisco and Argyle. The clinic is also adding a new providers, which will help patients see a doctor much quicker and easier.

Individual Attention and Care

“We know that each patient’s issue is individual,” said Dr. Benae. “We emphasize taking time to explain what is truly happening, so the patient understands our recommendations and how we
make decisions.”

Dr. Benae asserts that one of the most important things he’s learned over the years is that many patients are not always well informed of the treatment they are getting.

“What my patients need most are my time and compassion,” he said. “It’s important for me to slow down and listen to what they have to say. Often, they have been suffering for years. By the time they come to see me, they need someone to hear what they have been through. And I must feel confident before I offer a surgical option. The older and wiser I get, the more I know when not to operate.”

Dr. Benae also encourages patients to not feel rushed about deciding and to get a second opinion, so they are comfortable with any recommended plan of action.

First-time patients should bring any X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans or other studies that relate to their condition. They should also bring hospital or physician records, along with photo identification and insurance cards. If you are suffering from an injury related to a worker’s compensation claim, please have all the pertinent information for your
claim available.

Extending the Arm of Care

Philanthropy is an active arm of the practice through an association with the Brain Project Africa Foundation. The staff travel to various parts of the world sharing their skills and medical advances with those who are less fortunate.

“Patients in remote areas and third-world countries can benefit from the expertise of our staff through this platform. It’s astounding to see the difference in medicine here and there,” he said. “They don’t have the luxury of using supplies and discarding what’s left. They reuse everything — even surgical supplies. We don’t realize how blessed we are.”

While Dr. Benae’s primary focus is medicine, his work with the Brain Project impacts various sectors of the African Healthcare Ecosystem. Additionally, through the foundation’s emphasis on mentorship, young leaders in the field of medicine are groomed to be experts who can address a myriad of issues that impact their community.
