Patients in the Woodlands suffering from cardiac and vein care issues are fortunate to have Nasser Cardiology and Vein Center right in their own neighborhoods. George Nasser, MD, has been practicing in the Houston area for more than 20 years.
Dr. Nasser earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, where he also completed his internship and residency. He went on to complete his fellowship training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he later began his own practice. Dr. Nasser not only provides a range of cardiac treatments, including cardiac event monitoring, nuclear stress testing, echocardiography, and heart failure treatment, but he also specializes in vein care, utilizing minimally invasive treatments to offer patients better outcomes and improved quality of life.
His aggressive treatment of the superficial vein system is one of Dr. Nasser’s areas of expertise that distinguishes him from other practices in the area. While many focus only on the deep vein system to treat clotting (or thrombosis), Dr. Nasser also focuses on the superficial system, or the veins closer to the skin’s surface.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can often be serious, as it may lead to blood clots which travel to the lungs, brain, or heart, leading to organ damage and even death. Superficial vein thrombosis, though not generally life threatening, can be extremely painful and even embarrassing. Superficial vein thrombosis occurs in the veins just below the skin and is often accompanied by pain and swelling. In severe cases can it can result in restless, burning, swollen legs and even skin ulceration.
Dr. Nasser offers a variety of treatments for superficial vein issues beginning with compression, which is successful in resolving a large percentage of cases. When compression alone is unsuccessful, Dr. Nasser performs an ultrasound to identify areas of insufficient blood flow to the veins. At this point, he may perform a thermal ablation procedure using a catheter to inject hot sterile water and lidocaine into the blocked area and wrapping it for 72 hours. Another new but highly effective and more comfortable treatment Dr. Nasser offers is called physiologic glue. This treatment involves injecting a special glue to close off the affected vein.
Patients who suffer from spider veins and varicose veins will benefit from Dr. Nasser’s minimally invasive sclerotherapy treatment. His thorough examination includes ultrasound to check for superficial venous insufficiency, which when treated, will often resolve spider and varicose veins without further therapy.
Dr. Nasser clearly enjoys his work. “You learn something new every day,” he said. “I enjoy meeting new people and addressing new challenges. It’s rewarding to know that I am making a difference in my patients’ lives.” When he’s not solving his patients’ cardiac and vein issues, Dr. Nasser enjoys spending time with his children ages 24, 22, and 18. He loves movies, cycling, and riding motorcycles.
