Living purposefully isn’t just something Monique Muhammad talks about — it’s something she practices daily. She’s the founder of One Nine Group Inc., a professional and accounting services firm, and Code Pink Productions Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization that helps low-income families and at-risk girls.

“I wake up and intentionally choose to be happy, focus on the positive, and let my passion fuel my purpose,” said Muhammad.

She was raised by a single mother, Gloria, who instilled in her the values of education and hard work. Muhammad always went to school, even if Gloria couldn’t afford gas and other necessities. “My childhood shaped me,” Muhammad said. “My past experiences motivate me to be the best person I can be.”

Muhammad earned a bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies, then worked as a teacher while offering beauty services and tax preparation on the side. She also became a foster parent and gave birth to her daughter, Melayah.

Even while fighting breast cancer and supporting her mom through colon cancer, Muhammad stayed positive. After her mom passed away, Muhammad finished her master’s degree to fulfill her mother’s last wishes. “I wanted to honor her and prove her sacrifices were worth it.”

Muhammad hopes to inspire others through her Celebration of Life events and via her book, Power, Passion, Purpose, and Prayer. She is proud to be an example for young minorities in achieving their dreams.

“Living your purpose makes every day more satisfying,” she said.
