When Carol needed a kidney transplant, her brother, Bill, didn’t hesitate to become a donor. The transplant was performed in 1989 when Carol was in her mid-40s. Ten years later, her kidney began to fail due to complications from a heart attack. This time, Bill’s daughter, Debbie, offered to be a donor. Today, nearly 11 years later, Debbie and Carol continue to do great. In fact, Debbie, a physical fitness devotee, will compete on NBC’s obstacle course competition, American Ninja Warrior. And Bill? He has had no problem living with one kidney for 25 years.

“When my aunt needed another transplant, I prayed and followed my heart,” Debbie said. “Being a living donor is a completely selfless act that repays you in unimaginable ways. The ability to save a life is a tremendous feeling. It’s indescribable. Every time I think about it, tears come.”

Debbie added, “Donors undergo a very thorough medical evaluation to ensure donating a kidney will be safe. The surgery itself wasn’t a big deal. I only have four little scars less than an inch long. You really can’t see them.”

Carol says she’s blessed to have such a giving, loving family. “Words cannot begin to describe my gratitude for what they have done for me,” she said.

“I’m also thankful for Methodist Dallas. Their doctors are literally miracle workers. The staff and nurses are fantastic, too. Everyone is knowledgeable, helpful and kind. They are truly there for you. To this day, they are like family to me. You’re treated like a human being with feelings and emotions, not a number or just another patient coming through. I trust Methodist Dallas and wouldn’t go anywhere else.”

Transforming Lives Since 1981

Methodist Dallas is among the most active multi-organ transplant centers in the southwestern United States. The first kidney transplant at Methodist Dallas was performed 33 years ago and, in 1999, Methodist Dallas was the first in Texas to perform a successful laparoscopic, minimally invasive live donor kidney surgery (nephrectomy). Methodist Dallas’ team of experts treats patients from across the country and around the world. Each transplantation doctor has performed many transplants.

Beyond the advanced skills, knowledge and technologies required to provide exceptional treatments for transplant patients, the level of compassion and personalized care offered make Methodist Dallas truly stand out. While the transplant medical teams are heroes in the eyes of many, Dr. Richard Dickerman, the program’s surgical director, credits the donors. “The doctors aren’t the heroes; it’s the donors who are the heroes. Without them, none of what we do would be possible,” he said.
