Some people find their calling early in life, like Dr. Sharon Kirven, who decided to become a physician when she was in high school.
“I loved the idea of taking care of animals and thought about being a veterinarian, like many kids,” she says. “My aunt suggested I should consider becoming a medical doctor and take care of people instead. The more I thought about it, I knew it was the right path for me.”
Dr. Kirven’s childhood experiences led her to this “Aha!” moment in high school and shaped her desire to specialize in family medicine. Growing up in a small Texas town and coming from a large, loving, close-knit family, she understood the power of nurturing and the importance of taking care of others.
“Living in a big family and being the eleventh child out of 13 gave me a unique perspective. We didn’t have a lot, but always had what we needed, and I appreciated the value of having a good work ethic,” she says. “I also knew I could be anything I wanted to be. I had an inner drive to excel and paid attention to detail. These traits served me well as a student and helped set the foundation for attending medical school.”
Today, Dr. Kirven says she loves her job and can’t imagine doing anything else other than taking care of her “family of patients” at Mesquite Family Healthcare.
Quality Family Medicine, Caring that Comes from the Heart
Given her background and her innate desire to help others, Dr. Sharon Kirven is an approachable, compassionate physician with a down-to-earth personality. She and the team at Mesquite Family Medicine offer a full range of services for patients age four and up, and they enjoy seeing multiple generations of family members.
“We look forward to getting to know new patients as well as seeing familiar faces,” says Dr. Kirven. “Some of the patients I have treated since childhood have decided to become doctors, and it’s gratifying to think I have served as a good role model for them.”
Dr. Kirven also notes that it’s the ultimate compliment when patients refer others to her, knowing she and her team go the extra mile to provide high-quality, patient-centered care to all who come see them.
Partnering with Patients
Dr. Kirven believes in establishing a close rapport with her patients and working with them in a collaborative partnership to help them stay healthy and manage chronic disease, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. With a focus on wellness and preventive care, she helps patients understand how their lifestyle can impact overall health and brainstorms with them about ways to incorporate healthy choices into daily life.
“Enabling patients to participate in decision-making about their healthcare is an essential part of my approach to family medicine,” says Dr. Kirven. “A collaborative process with the patient working together with me toward a goal of improved health and wellness is much more effective and rewarding than dictating what someone should or shouldn’t do.”
When asked what else contributes to a positive patient experience, Dr. Kirven praises her team. “We have a fantastic group here at Mesquite Family Healthcare,” she says. “Most of the staff has been with me for several years. They are all smart, caring people, and we share the same patient-centered philosophy of care.”

“This was my first visit with Dr. Kirven and I was so impressed. She was patient and listened to my every concern before moving forward. I need to feel heard and like that my concerns are genuinely important to my doctor, and she did that. Before wrapping up, she asked if there any other concerns we should discuss because she actually wanted to know. Looks like I found myself a new family physician!”
“This is the best doctor in the world! She has a very sweet and caring presence. She makes you feel like you are important. She attentively listens to the patient without rushing them in order to get to the next patient.”
“Dr. Kirven is one in a million. She takes the time to listen. She sincerely cares about her patients. She spends time with you to find out what is going on with you. She asks you questions to help her understand what could be going on. I have been seeing Dr. Kirven for about eight years or more and will continue to see her for as long as I can.”
