Are you ready for a new start that can change your life and even help save it? Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital’s comprehensive surgical weight loss program called NewStart is designed to help you shed pounds, become healthier, and enjoy life more. It provides the tools you need to help you successfully achieve and maintain a lifelong healthy weight.

The Complete Package with NewStart

The Hospital’s bariatric program strives to give patients the best chance of a good outcome and successful, permanent weight loss. Its affiliated surgeons are all board certified and perform a full range of minimally invasive surgical solutions—the gastric sleeve, duodenal switch, gastric bypass, and revision surgery.

“We fit the surgery to the patient, versus the patient to the surgery,” says Dr. Sheilendra Mehta, Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery for Memorial Hermann Sugar Land’s NewStart Program.

The patient benefits of minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery include faster recovery and less postoperative discomfort than open surgery. The Hospital’s affiliated bariatric surgeons often perform robotic-assisted bariatric revision surgery with minimally invasive technology, which provides greater visibility and improved range of motion for this procedure than traditional minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques.

Designed to help you every step of the way, NewStart offers more than surgical options alone. Free informational seminars, assistance with insurance verification, pre-surgical counseling, post-surgical support, and quarterly peer support groups are provided, as well as information and support to help you adopt a healthier lifestyle and eating habits. Additionally, the Program’s nurse navigator, Brenda Zenon, reinforces information provided by the surgeons and staff, answers your questions, and addresses any concerns you may have during your weight loss journey.

Patricia Shares Her Weight Loss Story

Patricia began to gain weight after her mother’s death. At her heaviest, she weighed around 300 pounds and suffered from sleep apnea, had elevated blood pressure, and required oxygen therapy.

“I would stop breathing when I slept. It got to the point where I had to go to the ER,” Patricia says. “I used a C-PAP for 17 years for my sleep apnea. It was no way to live.”

In 2016, weighing 250 pounds, Patricia underwent gastric bypass surgery at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital.

“Everyone at Memorial Hermann was so nice and helpful, from Brenda, the nurse navigator and the nutritionist to my surgeon, Dr. Mehta. They answered all of my questions and made me feel comfortable,” Patricia says.

Now, after losing almost 90 pounds, Patricia no longer needs to wear a C-PAP, doesn’t require oxygen therapy, and doesn’t take medication. “I feel better than I have felt for years without all that weight and have so much more energy. I recommend Memorial Hermann Sugar Land for weight loss surgery. They gave me my life back. I’m free as a bird now without the oxygen and C-PAP!”

Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital—the recipient of the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2016—is the only hospital in Fort Bend County designated as a Center of

Excellence for bariatric surgery by the American College of Surgeons, with Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) accreditation.
