Although we know one in eight women will have invasive breast cancer at some point in her life, most of us are eternal optimists. We believe we’re not going to be the “one” in this statistic. Yet when you’re diagnosed with breast cancer, it doesn’t mean optimism is lost — it can blossom. Michele Diaz, a community leader, wife, busy mother of three boys, and breast cancer patient, found herself embracing positivity in a new and profoundly meaningful way after her diagnosis.

“So many incredible strides have been made in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, even over the last few years. My outlook is that this is something I’m going through, and I’m focused on a positive outcome. It’s not a death sentence,” Michele says.

Knowing she’s in the hands of experts at Medical City Lewisville bolsters Michele’s peace of mind. “I knew I’d receive great care at Medical City Lewisville. This gave me a deeper sense of comfort and confidence,” she shares. And great care it was and continues to be. Michele says she has been “treated like a queen” and has felt well-cared for every step of the way.

“The Medical City Lewisville team listens, asks questions, and answers yours. They are remarkably caring, humane, and compassionate, yet at the same time, honest and straightforward,” she says. By educating and communicating with Michele throughout her journey, fear of the unknown is removed, which further fuels her positive, can-do attitude.

“My advice to women facing breast cancer treatment is to read about what other women are saying and to find out what kind of questions they’re asking,” Michele says. She also found it helpful being paired with a couple who went through breast cancer for additional support — a service provided by Medical City Lewisville’s breast cancer patient navigator.

Dr. Bradley Hubbard, Reconstructive Breast Surgeon

Michele gives everyone at Medical City Lewisville high marks, including her breast surgeon Dr. Melissa Kinney, and her reconstructive plastic surgeon, Dr. Bradley Hubbard. “I was undergoing a double mastectomy, so I knew I’d be altered, but that it was for the best outcome,” Michele says. “Dr. Kinney is phenomenal. She was reassuring and never rushed me.” Dr. Kinney exemplifies the caliber of the physicians affiliated with Medical City Lewisville.

Dr. Hubbard placed Michele’s extenders during the same surgery as her mastectomy. She will undergo breast reconstruction with him in the near future. “Dr. Hubbard is passionate about helping women who have gone through this feel whole again. Both he and Dr. Kinney helped me see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

In addition to Michele’s message of strength and positivity, she offers this sage advice. “Don’t be afraid to talk about what you’re going through with others, especially family. I’ve found that talking with people and sharing my outlook helps them stay positive, too.”
