DIAGNOSIS, TREATMENT, PROMISING CLINICAL TRIALS
MD Anderson in the Bay Area is backed by more than 70 years of experience in cancer treatment, diagnosis and research by one of the nation’s leading cancer centers. Every member of the team has extensive training in oncology, including physicians, physician assistants, and advanced practice nurses. As a pioneer in cancer research, MD Anderson offers access to hundreds of therapies and clinical trials, many of which are only available at MD Anderson.
While MD Anderson in the Bay Area treats all types of cancer, the campus faculty has particular expertise in the diagnosis, treatment and management of:
- breast cancer
- head and neck cancer
- skin cancer and melanoma
In addition to medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons, and other clinical staff, MD Anderson in the Bay Area offers patient support services, including nutritional assessment and education, pain management, and a Road to Wellness program to help ease the transition from active cancer care to life after treatment. A nurse navigator works closely with the center’s breast cancer patients to guide them through every step of their treatment process, making it as easy and convenient as possible.
“We are proud to offer the MD Anderson philosophy and level of care to our patients right here in the Bay Area,” said Richard Ehlers, M.D., center medical director at MD Anderson in the Bay Area. “Our services are focused on multidisciplinary care, which means our patients have the full support of the team here in the Bay Area and at the Texas Medical Center campus when planning treatment and throughout their cancer journey.”

EXPERTISE IN BREAST CANCER TREATMENT
While all MD Anderson locations, such as the one in the Bay Area, offer the same level of care as the Texas Medical Center campus, each has its own set of specialties. MD Anderson in the Bay Area is specially positioned to help women in their fight against breast cancer.
“We have the only female breast surgeon on staff in southeast Houston, and we’re the only cancer center in our area performing partial breast irradiation,” Ehlers said. “We also work closely with local plastic surgeons, coordinating breast reconstruction surgery after mastectomy or lumpectomy. We do this all with the goal of helping our patients overcome cancer and get back to living their lives.”
Additionally, the center’s Breast Friends monthly support group is open to all breast cancer survivors and patients, regardless of treatment status.
