McKinney Periodontics & Implant Dentistry

David Philofsky, DDS, MS

“Listening to patients and understanding their needs and desires is a critical part of what I can do to help them achieve the results that we both want,” says David Philofsky, DDS, MS, of McKinney Periodontics & Implant Dentistry.”My philosophy of treatment is that both doctor and patient reach desired outcomes in the most conservative and safest way possible.”

Finding a board certified periodontist who has the right combination of training, experience, and dedication to patient care is sometimes no easy task. Dr. Philofsky and his staff at McKinney Periodontics & Implant Dentistry are dedicated to giving patients not only excellent care, but also to providing a comforting environment and a serious commitment to quality treatment.

Dental Implants

Advances in dental implant technologies and procedures have made them more popular than ever. Dental implants can be used to replace one missing tooth, multiple missing teeth, or replace all teeth due to periodontal disease, extensive tooth decay, or tooth fracture. Dental implants can replace these teeth in the safest and most esthetically pleasing way possible.

“Because of the advancements in both techniques and tissue regeneration, dental implant treatment can be much faster and safer than ever before,” says Dr. Philofsky. “This gives patients better outcomes quicker. It makes the entire process less painful while giving the patient optimal results with easier recovery time.”

Before dental implants, there was no permanent way to replace all teeth. Today, a fixed bridge can anchor a permanent solution, making removable dentures unnecessary. This solid and stable solution can last a lifetime, while preserving bone and retaining the patient’s natural facial appearance. Dental implants can give patients back a healthy mouth and a beautiful smile. When undergoing such extensive dental procedures, it’s important to have the right periodontal team on your side to ensure that your individual needs and concerns are addressed.

What is Gum Disease?

When faced with gum disease, a periodontist is the specialist you need that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of swollen, red, and tender gums. This condition can lead to tooth loss and may be a risk factor for heart and lung disease.

Periodontal disease is characterized by chronic gum inflammation and periodontal infection below the gum line. Stopping this inflammation and infection before it destroys teeth and causes bone loss is key to oral health. Recent studies show the connection between gum disease and other chronic illnesses and life changes like diabetes, heart disease, respiratory disease, and even pregnancy. Learning what you can do to best care for your oral health can prevent or halt the advancement of advanced gum disease. However, when corrective actions must be taken, your periodontist can provide treatments from deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) to periodontal bone and tissue regeneration surgery to repair and restore the damaged tissue.

Dr. Philofsky is also committed to overall patient wellness and education when it comes to the treatment of periodontal disease. “It’s important to me that every patient of mine not only deeply understands the treatment plan that I recommend, they also hear it directly from me. I have a consult room that is dedicated to these conversations, so that we can sit together and discuss at length both the problem we’re addressing and the treatment plan going forward. I sit down with my patients and take as much time as they’d like to discuss choices and options,” says Dr. Philofsky.

Technology is on Your Side

Dr. Philofsky’s philosophy of conservative and safe patient care carries through in all aspects of his practice. One area where that commitment is most obvious is in his dedication to the latest technology and equipment.

“What these technologies do, at the end of the day, is provide a better overall experience for patients. That’s my goal.”

Using the latest technology when performing advanced periodontal and dental implant work enhances patient care. By making extensive treatment more precise and less invasive than traditional methods, there’s less trauma and quicker recovery time because the tools used are simply more precise. “Immediate implants, for example, are a way to get predictable and better outcomes quicker,” says Dr. Philofsky. New technologies like CBCT scans can produce 3D images of your teeth, bone, and nerve pathways to allow for more precise and safe placement of dental implants. “Whether it’s dental implants, bone grafting, gum grafting, or other periodontal care, I’m always focused on less trauma to the patient.”

Other Services

Dr. Philofsky and his team at McKinney Periodontics & Implant Dentistry also offer gum lift (Esthetic Crown Lengthening), all types of gum tissue grafting, orthodontic related surgeries, oral cancer screenings, biopsies, extractions, and bone grafting regeneration procedures. Several forms of sedation are offered to ensure each patient can choose the method that best serves their needs. “One of my favorite parts of being a periodontist is giving people beautiful smiles through gum lifts and gum grafting procedures. The first step to a beautiful smile is having healthy, beautiful gum tissue that supports the teeth,” says Dr. Philofsky. “With my patients, I like to focus on listening to them and making sure I truly hear their concerns. Every patient is different. Once we can sit down together and discuss options—and that includes everything from prevention of gum disease to replacing missing teeth to dealing with esthetic concerns—we can find a conservative and safe way to best treat the patient’s needs. “
