From the moment you walk in the door, you know LifeStream Health Centre is a different kind of healthcare practice. The natural, warm colors offer a relaxing environment instead of the usual white walls and sterile feeling of a traditional clinic. The waiting room is welcoming, the patient rooms are cozy and comforting, and the staff goes above and beyond.
LifeStream Health Centre was started as women’s health clinic in 1992. Over the years, the services have expanded, and the focus has changed from traditional healthcare to an integrative and functional medicine approach. Functional medicine is gaining popularity as healthcare consumers look for providers who will listen to their needs and search for the root cause of their illnesses. Susan Harris, a certified nurse midwife (CNM) and family nurse practitioner (FNP) is a well-known and respected local clinician. In 2018, she was joined by Sharolyn Dihigo, a doctorally-prepared pediatric (PNP) and family nurse practitioner (FNP) with years of pediatric experience addressing the healthcare needs of the entire family.
“We want to bring compassion back to healthcare,” Susan said. “We start by listening to our patients and treating the whole person to identify root issues, not just medicate symptoms. We can address not only the ability to get well, but for you to stay well and live your best life—at any age.” The average LifeStream patient has already visited multiple healthcare practices, seen numerous healthcare providers, and is frustrated by the lack of answers about what’s really going on.
Each patient’s journey begins with advanced functional lab work that takes a deeper dive into what’s occurring on the inside. The LifeStream approach is about taking the best of Western medicine along with integrative and functional medicine practices and combining them with a broader understanding of the nature of illness, healing, and wellness to help each person restore their health or work to achieve optimal health.
The LifeStream team works to tailor treatments, making it unique to each patient. This may include bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, thyroid optimization, nutritional IV therapy, a detoxification program, or a customized weight-loss program. They also offer ozone therapy, platelet-rich plasma, hair restoration, and medical aesthetic services, as well as specialized testing such as functional stool analysis, microbiome mapping, genetic testing, and micronutrient testing.
“Our goal is to partner with each patient and guide them on their healthcare journey to restore and optimize their health through a focus on lifestyle modifications, healthy and clean eating, exercise, meditation and relaxation, spiritual and mental health, and stress reduction,” Sharolyn said. “Sometimes, we can’t heal the physical body until the emotional issues are addressed,” Susan said. “We leave no stone unturned.”
During this worldwide pandemic, it’s become even more apparent how important our immune system resilience truly is. A healthy body and balanced immune system are vital for fighting off illnesses such as corona virus, influenza, and chronic autoimmune conditions. People suffering from chronic health conditions are at a higher risk of poorer outcomes if they contract COVID-19. But what many people don’t realize is the majority of chronic health conditions are reversible.
At LifeStream, they take a different approach to healthcare. Instead of handing patients “a pill for every ill,” they partner with them and guide them on a road of better health. “Patients must be motivated and willing to change and adapt, be open minded, and truly willing to put forth the effort to take control of their own health and change their healthcare trajectory,” Susan said. “We’re here to guide them and provide support and encouragement, but our patients are truly the ones who heal themselves.”
