Maintaining good oral health has many rewards—a sparkling smile, fresh breath, and healthy gums. However, a healthy mouth can also be a benefit to your overall health. “We consider the mouth as a gateway to the rest of your body and plan all of our treatments around this school of thought,” explained Samantha Leatherwood, DMD. “More specifically, good oral hygiene can potentially reduce your risk for a number of systemic (or whole-body) diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and even pregnancy complications.”
Born and raised in Denton, Texas, Dr. Leatherwood graduated with honors from the Goldman School of Dental Medicine at Boston University and served her general practice residency at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. “This program was incredibly challenging and helped me begin to think about dentistry in a holistic and comprehensive manner, which is not taught in dental school.”
When it came time to settle down and start her own practice, the dentist chose to come back to Denton. “There’s really nothing like being home and being able to invest in the community that I was raised in. It makes a difference to know that I am helping people whom I’ve known my entire life,” she said.
Dr. Leatherwood holds herself to a higher standard in taking care of her patients and delivering beautiful restorations that are biologically compatible in an infection-free zone—an approach that is unique in dentistry today. “Comprehensive dentistry is the standard of care to end the cycle of patchwork dentistry with poor quality materials. We take our time to make sure you are comfortable with the options that will improve your oral health, eliminate pain, and improve your overall health,” she explained.
The doctor’s “three-prong approach” to caring for your mouth is looking at it as one unit which includes the biology (creating a pristine environment, including the use of nontoxic materials), function (everything needs to work together as a system), and aesthetics.
“People deserve to have a beautiful smile, but every smile is different and requires unique clinical and restorative protocols to maintain healthy teeth for a lifetime,” Dr. Leatherwood said. “We listen to your goals and figure out the treatment roadmap that is structured just to you.”
A new preventive product the dentist is excited about is the custom-made “perio trays” for the treatment of gingivitis, periodontitis, and implantitis. “We are seeing amazing results in lowering our patients’ risk of needing gum surgery.”
The entire team of Leatherwood Family & Cosmetic Dentistry wants to exceed your expectations for a great dental experience. “I have an incredibly solid, reliable, and like-minded staff,” Dr. Leatherwood shared. “Everyone from my hygienists to my front office staff focus on our patients’ comfort. We are all believers with the same values and core principles and feel that we have a gift to share. It’s amazing to be able to lift our patients’ confidence through their oral transformations.”
When not at the office, Dr. Leatherwood spends time with her husband developing their land, spending time with their two dogs, taking weekend trips, and exploring as much of the world as she can. “My life is blessed!”
