Todd McCracken, DDS, suffered from a terrible dental experience as a six-year-old boy in rural Texas. Like many people who’ve endured a frightening or painful dental procedure, the lasting trauma and fear of the dentist stayed with him. When it came to choosing his career path, a college friend mentioned that the best dentists are the ones who have the most empathy for their patients. Convinced by his friend, Dr. McCracken, who’d long been interested in chemistry and pharmacology, considered his choices. As a boy, he’d also been interested in art, but medicine continued to call to him. What better combination of artistry, medicine, and empathy than dentistry?
In practice since 1993, Dr. McCracken has devoted his life not only to preventing dental trauma in young patients, but to exploring new technologies and procedures to make extensive dental procedures more efficient and less painful for all patients. He practices homeopathic dentistry and natural treatments in addition to being an expert in advanced laser surgery techniques.
“Apprehensive patients wanted more from me, rather than for me to send them to a specialist. And so I became trained in the same services that a specialist would offer,” he says. For the past 23 years, Dr. McCracken has utilized lasers in dental surgery. “I was a part of a small group of dentists in North Texas in the 90s who learned the early protocols for treatment regimes. I bought my first laser in 1997, and since then I’ve received the honor of Master from the Academy of Laser Dentistry,” he says. “I’ve taught at Millennium Dental Technologies, The Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry at Baylor Dental School, and at UT’s Health Science Center in San Antonio. Laser surgery is less painful and more efficient than traditional surgery, and my goal is to provide patients with the best experience possible when they’re undergoing an extensive dental procedure.”
Not only is Dr. McCracken a certified trainer in Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP), a less invasive laser assisted surgery for advanced gum disease, he’s performed over 2000 such procedures. This experience, along with his easy-going manner and gentle touch, make Dr. McCracken the expert in dentistry that you need when faced with difficult, and sometimes frightening choices regarding your dental care.
Dr. McCracken is also experienced with the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique, a minimally invasive gum surgery alternative. In this procedure, there’s no bleeding, swelling, or pain that is generally associated with traditional gum surgery. There is a faster recovery time because no sutures or incisions are required.
“I’ll say it again: my goal is more efficient dentistry with less pain,” says Dr. McCracken. “There’s no reason for a patient to put off much-needed dental care because of fear. I stay up to date on the latest technologies so that patients have less pain and less anxiety. I also provide sedation dentistry at the patient’s request, because I want them to be as comfortable as possible with whatever procedure I perform.”
