Terry K. Gemas, MD
Nilpesh M. Patel, MD
James Stanley, MD
The impetus for selecting the field of orthopaedic medicine was the same for the three orthopaedists at Lakewood Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine—the desire to improve quality of life for patients with orthopaedic problems. The three arrived there differently however. Nilpesh Patel originally studied business and political science in college, while Terry Gemas, a college football player, was set on becoming an athletic trainer. Jim Stanley always dreamed of being a doctor; of helping those who are suffering. But as the three advanced in college, they each came to realize their desire to help people combined with their natural proclivity for “fixing things” made orthopaedic and sports medicine their ideal profession. And that it has been.
Dr. Nilpesh M. Patel
Dr. Patel specializes in hand, wrist and elbow care. A first-generation American, he was blessed with two strong role models. “My parents taught me to work hard at whatever I do and be the best I can be,” Dr. Patel said. “It’s something I watched them live out in every aspect of their lives. My goal as a doctor is to treat the patient, not the problem. If I really listen to my patients, they will tell me more than any exam. Patients today have so many treatment options. It’s my job to educate them, then to guide them as they make the choices that are right for them.”
While Dr. Patel focuses on upper extremities, Dr. Gemas concentrates on sports medicine including rotator cuff, ACL problems and total joint replacement. “A great day for me is one in which I know I’ve been able to get someone back to their activities—whether that’s a construction worker back to work or a runner back to his morning run. It’s important to us that a patient never feels rushed, but that we take all the time they need; that we are offering quality medicine, not quantity. Our work may not be life-or-death, but it’s quality of life. Our goal is to return patients to the life and activities they love.”
Specializing in spine surgery, Dr. Stanley takes a conservative approach to spine care. “The technological advances in our field in the past 10 years have been phenomenal,” he said. “Where traditional spinal surgery meant months of recovery time, laparoscopic surgery allows me to get my patients back doing the things they like to do and what they need to do, within weeks.” Even with new minimally-invasive options, Dr. Stanley looks at surgery as a last resort, after he has exhausted all noninvasive treatment options.
A Whole New World of Care
Founded in 2005 Lakewood Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine has become a vital part of our Greater DFW community, offering a whole new world of care. “Whether you’re an athlete or not, we take a ‘sports medicine approach’ to your care,” Dr. Gemas said. “That means we get you in quickly, evaluate you, treat you and get you back to the activities you love in a timely manner.”
“Our goal is to provide patient-focused, quality care,” said Dr. Patel. “We take a conservative, non-operative approach to patient care but, should you require surgery, we offer the most up-to-date, state-of-the-art surgical care to help you ‘get back in the game’ as quickly as we can.”
“We partner with our patients to restore their quality of life,” Dr. Stanley said. “We strive to make them happy, healthy and successful again, as noninvasively as possible.”
