Some people have a natural-born knack for creating something positive out of a not-so-great experience. Kidstown Dental’s Dr. Amy L. Luedemann-Lazar is one of these gifted people. She took one of her “worst experiences as a kid,” a trip to the dentist, combined it with her love for children, and turned it into something positive that became her life’s passion.

“I took all the things I disliked about going to the dentist as a child, and then determined what I could do to make it better,” said Dr. Luedemann-Lazar, whose patients call her Dr. Amy. “We are committed to providing accessible, painless, transformative dental experiences for children. Our goal is that every visit for every child is positive. This helps set the stage for good dental experiences in the future, and most likely, for the rest of their lives.”

Dr. Luedemann-Lazar strives to provide extraordinary, high-quality dentistry and goes above and beyond to create a great environment for her patients where they can feel comfortable, safe, and right at home. When it comes to fulfilling this mission, you might say Dr. Luedemann-Lazar is an over-achiever. “If there’s something out there that makes the dental experience better for our patients, we’re on it!” she said.

Advanced technology, including lasers, plays a big role in Dr. Ludermann-Lazar’s practice. She enjoys grown up dentists’ toys as much as her patients like theirs! For example, she performs procedures such as fillings and crowns painfree without shots and gag-free cavity detection without radiation and with a greater degree of accuracy than traditional or digital X-rays. She also uses lasers to quickly and painlessly remove the frenum (a piece of tissue in the mouth connecting the lip to the gum) for infants who have difficulty latching.

“My youngest frenectomy patient was four days old. It’s safe, painless, and effective,” Dr. Luedemann-Lazar said.

In addition to an upbeat, friendly staff and kid-oriented office design, Dr. Luedemann-Lazar says it takes more to create a truly comfortable and fun dental experience for children. Once again, going back to her traumatic experience at the dentist as a child, she evaluated what she didn’t like and then set out to make it different for her patients.

“Having a silent stranger with giant hands working in my mouth and using equipment I’d never seen before was intimidating,” Dr. Luedemann-Lazar said. “We make it a priority to spend a lot of time at the beginning of the appointment getting acquainted with our patients and making a connection with them. We use hands-on learning tools to help kids understand what dentists do and what’s going to happen while they’re visiting us. Even with little kids, knowledge, understanding and feeling connected with the dentist and staff helps allay fears.”

  1. No-shot procedures, including fillings and crowns
  2. Gag-free X-rays
  3. Interactive hands-on learning lab familiarizes children with the dental environment
  4. No restraints policy
  5. Kid-friendly, contemporary, innovative office
  6. Assesses infant latching problems, treats painlessly with laser
  7. D-termined program helps children with Autism, other special needs and fearful children

D-termined is one of the programs Dr. Luedemann-Lazar uses to help children have a positive experience at her office. Although the methods and techniques were designed to help autistic and special needs’ kids sail through routine dental procedures with flying colors, it helps all children.

“I first learned about D-termined in residency and was fascinated. It really works, helping kids become more familiar and comfortable in a dental setting,” Dr. Luedemann-Lazar explained. “We start with small steps, such as sitting on the chair and making eye contact. Then we help them with positioning in the chair. Once they’re comfortable, we do things in increments, counting to 10. Most procedures can be done by adding together increments of 10 seconds.”

“There’s no better place in Katy to take your kids to the dentist. Dr. Amy and her staff are so friendly and welcoming. In other dentist offices you can hear the kids in the lobby crying because they’re scared, but that isn’t the case here. Obviously, as a pediatric dentist, you would expect the place to be very kid-friendly, but Kidstown really goes above and beyond. Highly recommend!” – K.C.

“I was nervous about taking my 3-year-old because I wasn’t sure how she would do. She did great! The staff is very nice and know how to handle kids. They take baby steps with them and make them feel safe. Dr. Amy was really friendly and knowledgeable. I wish she did adults too! I highly recommend this place.” – A.L.

“I can’t begin to express how amazing Dr. Luedemann and her staff are. From the moment you walk in, you are greeted by the most friendly staff. I have two young boys who have in the past always been extremely nervous and actually cried during their dental visits…not here! They do so much teaching, really related with my children on their level and  made the experience extremely pleasant and fun! Dr. Luedemann is extremely knowledgeable, has the most gentle and patient nature, has a true love for working with children and the sweetest and most fun personality! Her passion and love for dentistry is incredible. I caught myself wishing she was my dentist as well! My boys even received little awards for being good patients.” – H.M.
