Sula Umansky, DDS

Amazingly, Dr. Sula Umansky’s journey to becoming a trusted family dentist, the face behind popular Katy Dental Arts in LaCenterra, began when she was 11 years old. “I had a difficult time as a child due to my smile,” she said. “My teeth were so misaligned I had difficulty eating, or even speaking. I was fortunate though to have a talented dentist and orthodontist who corrected my bite and restored normal, healthy function. It’s what inspired me to become a dentist—to do for others what they did for me.”

Her path to becoming a dentist did take a few detours, as she spent her late teens and early twenties as her mother’s primary caregiver. “She was an incredible person who never let an obstacle get in her way,” Dr. Umansky said. “Throughout college and dental school, she often accompanied me to school when her home healthcare aide was unavailable. During my undergraduate years, I packed my courses into the mornings while Mom’s home healthcare aide was available and studied while I took care of her after class. She also often accompanied me to class during dental school, She sat with me in the back of the lecture halls and sat in her wheelchair just outside the treatment bay while I saw patients on my clinic days.”

Meet Dr. Umansky

Sula Umansky earned her bachelor’s degree in history and chemistry from Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi and her dental degree from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston. She moved to Cinco Ranch with her mom in 2002, and worked in West Houston and Sugar Land. After her mother’s passing in 2008, she opened her first practice in Katy where she’s been ever since. Since that time, she’s completed over 1,000 hours of continuing education in cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics, implant dentistry, sedation dentistry, pediatric dentistry, endodontics (root canal therapy), and periodontics (gum disease).

“I’m lucky to love what I do,” she said. “I strive to treat all my patients like they’re my family. Whenever I present a treatment plan or perform a procedure, I ask myself one simple question, ‘Is this the treatment I’d want for my family?’”

Dr. Umansky designed Katy Dental Arts to be an oasis where her patients could be completely at ease. “Life is so hectic these days with work, kids, and other responsibilities,” she said. “I started with a convenient location. LaCenterra is the premier lifestyle center in Katy, a great place to shop, dine, and relax while strolling through the beautiful open spaces.” Dr. Umansky’s office overlooks the main courtyard reflecting the serenity of this unique location.

“Secondly, I wanted the interior spaces to pamper my patients and let them know how much I appreciate them,” she said. “The soft colors, comfortable furnishings, and five-star amenities are all designed to create a sense of calm and well-being.” Dr. Umansky and her experienced staff offer patients a wide array of comforts such as warm blankets, eye pillows, relaxing paraffin hand wax treatments, overhead entertainment, and Bose headphones to sync to their personal playlists.

Patient Comfort and Privacy

“All our patient suites are private,” she said. “For years, dental offices have been designed with an open concept. This allows the dentist to move quickly between patients, but often service and privacy suffer. I like to take a more relaxed approach and spend time finding out what’s important to my patients. I believe the discussions we have about their treatment options and financial arrangements should be done in complete privacy, something many dental offices simply don’t provide. Thirdly, I wanted to integrate the best technology dentistry has to offer into my practice. With advanced procedures such as dental implants becoming more mainstream and the high aesthetic results my patients demand, the tools of modern dentistry are mandatory.”

Toward that end, Dr. Umansky has invested in 3D cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT), digital X-rays, intraoral cameras, laser cavity detection, advanced oral cancer screening technology, and more. “My patients deserve the very latest technologies for a complete picture of their oral health and treatment options,” she said.

“What keeps me excited about dentistry is the variety of procedures I can perform,” Dr. Umansky said. “I get personal satisfaction from seeing my patients every six months and assuring them they’re healthy. When they break a tooth or get a cavity, I’m here for them. When they look in the mirror after a cosmetic procedure such as porcelain veneers, it’s not unusual for me to get a big hug. Really, how good is that?”

Changes for Your Safety

Considering our nation’s ongoing public health crisis, Dr. Umansky and her experienced staff have moved their office design away from the open concept to a fully private patient experience. “The clean modern design of our office allows for thorough frequent disinfection and our private treatment suites dramatically reduce the opportunity for cross contamination compared to the open-air concept found in most other dental offices. Plus, it is the recommended configuration from the CDC.” In addition to following all CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommendations, Dr. Umansky and her team strictly adhere to guidance from the American Dental Association and Texas State Board of Dental Examiners.

“We’ve also moved to exceed the recommendations by placing HEPA 13 medical-grade air scrubbers throughout the office and in each treatment suite, capable of cleaning the complete air volume of the rooms in under three minutes,” Dr. Umansky said. “We’re using double high-volume evacuation techniques for all aerosol producing procedures and are introducing additional extraoral containment measures to capture even the most minute number of dental aerosols. We’re fully committed to not only provide a true five-star dental experience, but one that will provide a five-star safety experience as well.”
