Sula Umansky, DDS
When we heard about Dr. Sula Umansky and her journey to becoming a trusted family dentist with a thriving local practice, Katy Dental Arts in LaCenterra, we wanted to hear more. What a surprise to learn her journey began when she was only 11 years old.
“I had a difficult time as a child due to my smile,” she said. “It was more than just an appearance issue. My teeth were so misaligned I had difficulty eating—or even speaking. I was fortunate to be under the care of a talented dentist and orthodontist who were able to correct my bite and restore normal, healthy function. It was that profound experience that inspired me to become a dentist—to do for others what they did for me.”
The road from childhood dreams to reality took a lot of hard work—and a little luck. “My path to becoming a dentist took a couple of detours as I spent my late teens and early twenties as my mother’s primary caregiver,” Dr. Umansky said. “She was an incredible person who never let an obstacle get in her way. When I started college and went on to dental school, my mom often accompanied me when her home healthcare aide was unavailable.”
Imagine undertaking the rigors of dental school while providing 24-hour care for a loved one. “Once I got started, quitting was never an option,” she said. “When I was in college getting my undergraduate degree, I’d pack my courses into the mornings while my mom’s home healthcare aide was available and study while I took care of my mom after class. Dental school was a bit tougher. My mother often had to accompany me to class and sit with me in the back of the lecture halls. On my clinic days, she’d sit in her wheelchair just outside the treatment bay while I saw patients.”
Meet Dr. Umansky
Sula Umansky attended Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi where she earned her bachelor’s degree in history and chemistry. She went on to graduate from the University of Texas Dental Branch here in Houston in 2002 then moved to Cinco Ranch with her mom working in West Houston and Sugar Land. In 2008, after her mother passed away, she opened her first practice in Katy and has been here ever since. Her dedication to learning didn’t stop with dental school. Since that time, she’s completed over 1,000 hours of continuing education in cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics, implant dentistry, sedation dentistry, pediatric dentistry, endodontics (root canal therapy), and periodontics (gum disease).
Her treatment philosophy is simple and succinct. “I’m so lucky to love what I do every day,” she said. “I strive to treat all my patients like they’re my family. Whenever I present a treatment plan or perform a procedure, I ask myself one simple question, ‘Is this the treatment I’d want for my family?’”
As she designed and built her Katy Dental Arts, Dr. Umansky had a clear vision of what she wanted to offer her patients. “I wanted to provide an oasis where my patients could be completely at ease,” she said. “Our lives are so hectic these days, with work, children, and other responsibilities. First, I wanted to be in the most convenient location possible. LaCenterra is the premier lifestyle center in Katy. It’s a great place to shop, dine, and relax while strolling through the beautiful open spaces.” Dr. Umansky’s office overlooks the main courtyard which she hopes reflects the serenity of this unique location.
“Secondly, I wanted to design the interior spaces to pamper my patients and let them know how much I appreciate them,” she said. “The soft colors, comfortable furnishings, and five-star amenities are all designed to create a sense of calm and well-being.” Dr. Umansky and her experienced staff offer patients a wide array of comforts such as warm blankets, eye pillows, relaxing paraffin hand wax treatments, overhead entertainment, and Bose headphones to sync to their personal playlists.
“Most importantly, all of our patient suites are private,” she said. “For so long the typical dental office has been designed with an open concept. This is great for the dentist to move quickly between patients, but service and privacy suffers as a result. I like to take a more relaxed approach and spend time finding out what’s most important to my patients. I also believe the discussions we have about their treatment options and financial arrangements should be done in complete privacy, something many dental offices don’t provide. Thirdly, I wanted to integrate the best technology that dentistry has to offer. With advanced procedures such as dental implants becoming more mainstream and the high aesthetic results my patients demand, the tools of modern dentistry are mandatory.
Toward that end, Dr. Umansky has invested in 3D cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT), digital X-rays, intraoral cameras, laser cavity detection, advanced oral cancer screening technology, and more. “My patients deserve the very latest technologies for a complete picture of their oral health and treatment options,” she said.
“What keeps me so excited about dentistry is the variety of procedures I’m able to perform,” Dr. Umansky said.
“I get such personal satisfaction from seeing my patients every six months and letting them know they’re healthy. When they break a tooth or get a cavity, I’m here for them. When they look in the mirror after a cosmetic procedure such as porcelain veneers, it’s not unusual for me to get a big hug. Really, how good is that?”
