While riding across Utah on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, Dr. Karen Williamson discovered a charitable cause that would remain dear to her heart for years to come.
Dr. Williamson is a member of the Crown Council, an alliance of leading-edge dental teams that are passionately committed to promoting oral health, fighting oral cancer, and serving their communities through charitable work. As part of the Crown Council, Dr. Williamson takes part in charity work and continuing education opportunities like the one that lead to her motorcycling adventure.
Through the Crown Council, Dr. Williamson and her staff support two important charities— Smiles for Life and Patriot Paws.
Smiles for Life – From March through June each year, Dr. Williamson and hundreds of dental practices in the United States and Canada raise money by professionally whitening teeth. Patients pay a fee that’s considerably lower than the usual cost of whitening. Dr. Williamson and her staff donate their time and the materials. The patients’ fees go to charity. Part of the funds raised benefit seriously ill, disabled, and underprivileged children in local communities and around the world.
“It’s really a win-win,” Dr. Williamson said. “The patients get their teeth professionally whitened and they help their community at the same time.” Another portion of the funds raised by Dr. Williamson go to support her current charity of choice, Patriot PAWS.
Patriot PAWS – The mission of Patriot PAWS is to train and provide high-quality service dogs at no cost to disabled American veterans and others with mobile disabilities and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The service dogs are able to help people restore physical and emotional independence. Patriot PAWS reaches its mission by building partnerships with local, state, and national organizations.
“Patriot PAWS is a charity that is close to my heart because my husband served in the military,” Dr. Williamson said. “We think it’s important to support our vets—especially those who are injured or suffering from PTSD. It’s amazing what the trained dogs can do to help people.”
Hurricane Relief – When the Smiles for Life campaign came to an end last year, Dr. Williamson and her staff decided to continue their teeth whitening fundraiser and donate the proceeds to victims of Hurricane Harvey.
“I really want to thank our patients because without them, we couldn’t do this,” Dr. Williamson said. “Rockwall is a great place to practice. We have the best patients. It’s also a great place to live and to raise our children.”
It’s About the Patients
Dr. Karen Williamson believes in forming meaningful relationships with her patients. For the past 25 years, patient relationships have been critical to her successful dentistry practice. She carries this notion into her relationships with her staff as well by selecting team members who are passionate about listening to patients and providing personalized long-term care.
“We want to give our patients the dental care and smiles they deserve,” Dr. Williamson said. “We cater to our patients’ unique smile goals and needs. We listen to concerns and answer questions. In our office, we offer calming amenities and entertainment to make each visit a good experience. And, we deliver the most successful procedures, those with proven results.”
Another value Dr. Williamson holds is a respect for continuing education for herself and her team. “We want our patients to have the safest and most effective treatment methods, so our team never stops learning,” she said.
Dr. Williamson hosts a yearly seminar called “Learning on the Lake,” where 50 dentists from surrounding areas come to discuss new dental discoveries and advancements. Her father, a NASA engineer, believed in lifelong learning and was the inspiration for hosting the seminar.
With a devotion to meeting all of her patients’ oral health needs, Dr. Williamson offers restorative, general, and cosmetic dentistry treatments tailored to creating healthy, beautiful smiles that can last a lifetime. Dental services provided by her practice include sedation, implants, bridges, dentures, root canals, bonding, periodontics, laser dentistry, and emergency dentistry.
For patients who want to achieve even and bright teeth in a single appointment, Dr. Williamson offers CEREC technology. This allows Dr. Williamson to design, manufacture, and place a ceramic crown in one visit.
To restore chips, cracks, or cavities, Dr. Williamson offers Bioclear Bonding, a more conservative and easy-to-repair alternative to traditional bonding. This highly aesthetic option is designed to return strength and functionality to patients’ smiles.
“Transforming your smile can have a lasting impact on your overall appearance and self-esteem,” Dr. Williamson said.
For those suffering with sleep apnea, a condition that leaves many feeling fatigued when they wake up in the morning, Dr. Williamson provides customized treatments. Many people who snore don’t even realize they need help with sleep apnea, and Dr. Williamson can give that help.
“About 18 million people suffer from sleep apnea and many of them have no idea their airways are collapsing throughout the night,” she said. “Everyone deserves to wake up feeling refreshed and healthy. We offer sleep apnea screenings, and work to educate patients about symptoms and treatment options. Overcoming sleep apnea results in better sleep quality and perhaps a longer life.”
