Houston Skin Associates
Let’s face it. We’re all pretty busy these days. Between work, family, volunteer duties, and trying to maintain some semblance of social life, it’s easy to put our health needs on the back burner. Sure, you get your teeth cleaned regularly. You begrudgingly endure your annual mammogram and pelvic. But when was the last time you touched base with your dermatologist?
As the largest organ on your body, your skin is there day-in and day-out protecting your other organs from the outside world. Shouldn’t you be paying as much attention to it as any other part of your body? Unlike your other organs, your beautiful, healthy-looking skin can boost your confidence and make your life more pleasant. (You know this all too well, if you’ve ever had a skin breakout just before an important occasion.)
Here in Texas maintaining a healthy relationship with a professional dermatologist is even more important. Because so many of us enjoy an outdoorsy lifestyle, regular skin cancer checks can help identify precancerous areas and treat them long before they become a problem. Dr. Karan Sra of Houston Skin Associates recommends that her patients schedule a yearly skin cancer check, more frequent if they’ve had previous skin cancers, are fair-skinned or redhead, or have a family history of skin cancer.
“Each year in the U.S. over 5.4 million cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer are treated in more than 3.3 million people,” she said. “That’s more new cases of skin cancer than of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung, and colon combined. The good news is that skin cancer is highly treatable, when diagnosed early. That makes yearly check-ups at the dermatologist’s vital for us all. Diagnose early, treat, and get back to life.”
Additionally, Dr. Sra knows that her patients skin can carry clues about the health of their other organs. “Changes in the skin, ranging from discoloration and rashes to new growth, can be early signs of more serious underlying health problems,” she said. “A handful of skin changes have been commonly associated with internal diseases. During a yearly check-up, your dermatologist will look for these clues and may ask you, ‘When did this change occur?’ and may look for other symptoms to understand what’s going on inside your body or even in your mind. Your skin is like a window to the health of the rest of your body.”
Beyond meeting the medical needs of her patients, Dr. Sra realizes that as we age, our skin may need a little tweaking to keep it looking young and inviting. That’s why she and her colleagues at Houston Skin Associates offer a full menu of aesthetic skincare services including Botox and Dysport, chemical peels, dermaplaning, microdermabrasion, photofacials, and dermal fillers. And with swimsuit weather right around the corner, they’ll have your ready for the beach or pool with CoolSculpting, leg vein treatments, stretchmark treatment, and hair reduction.
