Dr. John Bauer had an interesting experience recently. He saw a young child for his first dental check-up and realized this was the fourth generation of the family to sit in his dental chair. That’s what happens when you practice dentistry in the same place for 30 years. You become part of a lot of families, as you care for kids, watch them grow up, head off to college, come home with a spouse and start a family of their own. For Dr. John it’s been a wonderful ride, made even more memorable because he’s been able to share it with his wife, Terri, and now with their son, Dr. Cody Bauer. “Our goal since the early 70s has been to show love and compassion for as many patients as possible; changing lives, one at a time through dentistry,” he said.
“We’ve had the same office staff for many years,” he said. “We’ve celebrated a lot of milestones together; weddings, births and deaths and more. They share our passion to inspire and nurture the human spirit; one person; one smile and one community at a time. There’s nothing in our lives that’s as important as family. Because that’s true, our goal is for every patient we treat to feel like a member of the Mansfield Family Dentistry family.”
A lot has changed over the past three decades and the Bauers have strived to stay ahead of advancing dental technology. “More and more is being discovered about the affect your oral health has on your body and on your chances of developing conditions such as heart disease, osteoporosis and diabetes,” he said.
“Just as general medicine is moving away from reactive treatment of existing conditions and moving toward proactive health management (with doctors empowering patients to take their health into their own hands) modern dentistry is and should be about educating patients to care for their teeth and gums, so they never have to address a cavity or gum disease in the first place. Nobody cares about your teeth the way you do. That’s why patient education is important, offering each patient the tools they need for a lifetime of vibrant oral health then partnering with them on that journey.”
An Arlington boy married to a Mansfield girl, Dr. John moved to Mansfield when there were only 6,000 residents. A graduate of Texas A&M and Baylor College of Dentistry, he established Mansfield Family Dentistry with his wife, Terri, in the early 70s. Thousands of patients and hundreds of hours of continuing education later, their practice is at the forefront of dental innovation. Dr. John places an emphasis on cosmetic, restorative and implant dentistry and works tirelessly to learn the newest and most effective techniques. Terri manages their practice and performs treatment coordination, allowing Dr. John and Dr. Cody to focus on what they do best, tending to the dental needs of each member of the Mansfield Family Dentistry family.
When not on the job, Dr. John enjoys spending as much time as possible spoiling his nine grandkids. He makes yearly medical mission trips to Guatemala to serve orphans there through dentistry.
