Although Raul Campos was suffering every day with hereditary bunions, the idea of surgery was not a welcome one. “I’d actually had the surgery 20 years ago,” he said. “It was a fiasco. My foot swelled up like a balloon. Recovery was unbelievably painful.” But when his condition got too bad to ignore, he consulted his company’s concierge medical service.

“They highly recommended a local podiatrist, Dr. Jill Wisdom at Premier Foot and Ankle,” he said. “I went to see her and right away felt like this might be a good option for me. She was very professional yet very friendly. She talked to me about advances in bunion surgery and what the procedure and recovery would entail.”

Raul had a bunionectomy on both feet. “I came out of it with no bruising, a tiny bit of swelling and no pain,” he said. “I couldn’t have dreamt it would go so well. Dr. Wisdom understands how to do what needs to be done while doing the least amount of damage (or trauma) to the foot. If you’d seen my foot a week after surgery, you’d have thought it had been months.”

The experience was similar for Shelley Wickersham. “I’d suffered with bunions for years,” she said. “It got to the point where the only shoes I could wear were tennis shoes. Friends and relatives warned me not to have the surgery. A doctor even told me it wasn’t worth the pain of recovery.”

Then Dr. Wisdom performed a bunionectomy on a friend of Shelley’s and the friend had wonderful results. “I took four days off work to have it done myself,” Shelley said. “I was back at work on the fifth day. I’ve only had one foot done now. It’s straight and perfect. You’d never know I’d a problem. I’m scheduled for the other soon. Dr. Wisdom was very sweet. She answered all my questions and kept my husband informed and reassured throughout my surgery.”

Sanne Bogart put off her own bunion surgery for years. “I was actually scheduled to have it done in 1998, but I got pregnant,” she said. “My mother and grandmother both had bunions, and I knew how they suffered. I knew it wasn’t something that would get better or go away. When I couldn’t stand it any longer, I did some research online and Dr. Wisdom was so highly recommended that I made an appointment to see her.”

Sanne originally planned to see several doctors before choosing one. But one visit with Dr. Wisdom, and she looked no further. “I met her once and she felt like an old friend,” Sanne said. “Her office staff is very friendly and professional.” Sanne had the surgery on one foot in July and the other in September. “I’m back to teaching Zumba classes and looking forward to wearing sandals this summer,” she said. “Dr. Wisdom did an amazing job. I wish I’d done this years ago.”

“Bunion surgery isn’t what it used to be,” Dr. Wisdom said. “It’s performed on an out-patient basis and patients are up and walking that day. After a couple weeks in a post-op shoe and a couple in tennis shoes, your feet are pretty enough to wear sandals again. And because it’s not considered cosmetic surgery, it’s covered by most insurance plans.”

Since 1996, Dr. Wisdom has treated patients suffering from hereditary bunions as well as a full range of foot and ankle-related problems. She sees patients of all ages, from student athletes to seniors. “I see a lot of runners,” she said. “Runners hate to be told they can’t run while undergoing treatment. I can usually allow them to cut back a bit, while still effectively treating their problem.”

A soccer player herself, she treats other soccer players of all ages. When not on the job, Dr. Wisdom enjoys time with her husband their seven-year-old and eight-year-old triplets. “They’re all playing academy sports now and love to snow ski,” she said. “We stay busy in Girl Scouts and go to Pine Cove a couple times a year.” Dr. Wisdom is now accepting new patients at Premier Foot and Ankle in McKinney and Plano.
