Jean Louis Benae, MD

Board-Certified Neurosurgeon
of North Texas Brain & Spine Specialists
A Brain Surgeon with a Heart

Dr. Jean Louis Benae is just one man. But that doesn’t mean he can’t make a tremendous impact. Whether he’s consulting with patients at his North Texas Brain & Spine Specialists practice, performing state-of-the-art surgery, or volunteering his time on his numerous medical mission trips, Dr. Benae has one goal: for his patients’ lives to be better for having known him.  Although he is a board certified surgeon, for him surgery is always a last resort, after all less invasive options have been exhausted.

Conservative Care

“The absolute last thing I want to do is operate on someone who doesn’t need it,” Dr. Benae said. “Yet I’d like to be the first doctor you see, not the last. That way I can work with you on a road map for recovery, preferably without surgery. I can coordinate services with other specialists. But if there does come a time where surgery is your best option, I’m already in on the ground floor and understand exactly what’s happening. What my patients need most is my time and compassion.”

Minimally-Invasive Surgery

Dr. Benae spends his days consulting with patients suffering from chronic back and neck pain or disorders of the brain and nervous system. Many of them have been suffering for years and have all but given up on regaining their quality of life. “Pain can be a scary thing and can come from many different sources,” Dr. Benae said. “I partner with my patients to investigate and find the root cause of their pain, so we’re not just masking their symptoms but correcting their problem. Most of the patients I see will never have surgery. But when surgery is our best option, we prefer minimally-invasive surgery, so we can minimize tissue trauma and they can heal faster and get back to active life sooner.”

Healer—Educator—Surgeon

“As physicians we are healers,” Dr. Benae said. “We learn to observe people—to study the whole person and discover what’s causing them pain. Next our role is that of educator, outlining for our patients exactly what is happening and what their treatment options are. I can make recommendations but ultimately the decision is up to the patient. Then we are their healthcare partners, respecting their decisions and correcting their problem in the least invasive way possible. Surgeon is the very last hat I want to wear.”

Individualized Care

Each patient is unique, so care is highly individualized. “It’s up to me to really listen and learn as much as I can about a patient,” Dr. Benae said. “Only then can I design a treatment plan that fits them and their lifestyle. There’s still so much we doctors don’t understand about the human body. We need to approach each patient with no preconceived notions and use our communication skills and listening skills before we use anything else.”

At North Texas Brain & Spine Specialists, Dr. Benae offers:

  • Minimally-invasive Spine Surgery

Latest-Generation Digital X-Rays and Anti-Gravity Rehab Treatment

Thanks to the latest, cutting-edge Konica Minolta digital X-rays, Dr. Benae is about to provide his patients with the most precise, highest quality X-rays available which are easily transferable to your primary care physicians or other specialists. And a new AlterG anti-gravity treadmill means patients can reduce gravity’s impact during rehabilitation, from 20 percent to 100 percent of their body weight. So, patients with many neurological conditions can regain mobility and strength faster with less pain and discomfort.

Paying it Forward

Born in Cameroon and raised in France, Dr. Benae never forgot his home country. Each year, he participates in medical mission trips, bringing first-world medicine to the impoverished nation. He recently spent three weeks in Cameroon, performing pro bono surgery and helping transform a dilapidated operating theater. “It’s astounding to see the difference in medicine here and there,” he said. “They don’t have the luxury of using supplies and discarding them. They reuse everything, even surgical supplies. We don’t realized how blessed we are.”

Dr. Benae is the founder of Future of Africa Foundation, a charitable organization that seeks to improve life for the average African. “I focus on medicine but we also have arms of the foundation that seek to improve engineering, energy, financing, and other areas,” he said. “We have a strong mentorship emphasis, to raise up young leaders who can address issues of hunger, sickness, sexual assault, and loneliness that impact children and youth living in the streets.”

When not on the job, Dr. Benae he enjoys soccer and swimming with his three sons. He’s now accepting new patients at North Texas Brain & Spine Specialists. Call (972) 704-1535 to make an appointment.
