Ifeoma Arene wanted a career where she could change lives. With an older brother and sister who both chose a career in medicine, she looked in that direction and decided she would study psychiatry. “It seemed to be a new, emerging and growing field,” she said. “I thought it would be challenging and would allow me to give the personal care I longed to give.”

Turns out it was the perfect choice for her. “As a patient once told me, ‘with some illnesses you can get on with your life. But when your mind is broken, you can’t function’,” Dr. Arene said. “It’s extremely rewarding for me, when a patient comes to me depressed or with such anxiety that they’re unable to leave their house, and I’m able to help them return to being a whole person again, to being a wife, to being mother.”

Board certified in both adult and child psychiatry, with extensive experience in geriatric psychiatry, Dr. Arene served as medical director of a geriatric psychiatric unit for four years. “I was raised in a family that promoted excellence—in everything you do,” Dr. Arene said. “Being a woman, I found medical school more difficult than I might have as a man. I don’t think the same doors automatically opened for me. I had to prove myself more than a man might. But I feel like being a woman is a great asset in psychiatry. Women are, by nature, more empathic. My mother was a great role model for me. She taught me true concern for other people.”

Born in Nigeria but raised in Arizona, Dr. Arene returned to Nigeria to complete her education. After medical training at University of Lagos, she completed her psychiatric training at University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey School, Newark, New Jersey, obtained her child fellowship from University of Texas Medical Branch and set up her private practice, Medcare Clinic, in 2007. Since then she has had the privilege of caring for patients of all ages and now has locations in Willowbrook and Tomball. “Even though some conditions might have the same diagnosis, it’s important that I recognize each patient as an individual,” she said. “It’s important that I ask the right questions, to allow them to tell their unique story. That helps me find the right treatment approach for each individual patient.”

When she’s not on the job, Dr. Arene enjoys tennis, travel, spending time with her husband and two children and making a difference through her church. “I am a champion of women’s education,” she said. “It began during my internship in Kingston, Jamaica, where I saw young women become pregnant and unable to complete their schooling. Since that time I have done what I can to empower young women in other countries to return to school and complete their schooling.”

“Psychiatry is a growing field,” Dr. Arene said. “There’s still a lot of research, new medicines and new treatments. It’s a field for the inquisitive mind and the sky is the limit. It’s a career choice that really allows you to make a difference in the world and to change lives for the better. If I’m successful as a parent, I will raise my own two children to seek to do what they are passionate about and find their own way to change their world.”

Dr. Arene is now accepting new patients at both Medcare Clinics locations in Willowbrook and Tomball.
