What does freedom mean to you? Freedom to live life to the fullest? Freedom to live pain-free? Freedom to feel healthy and ready to take on the world? Freedom to enjoy daily life without disease? For Dr. Tory Schoonmaker (Dr. Tory), it means all of these things.

The joy of helping others during a two-year mission with his church when he was 19, energized Dr. Tory’s love for working with people. When he returned, his passion continued, and he focused on helping people achieve long-term health and wellness, not just a quick fix. Today, he has helped countless patients achieve optimum wellness and freedom in health through proper care and prevention.

“Our goal isn’t to treat symptoms by masking problems, we treat the underlying cause and strive to provide a solution,” Dr. Tory said. “Proper care and treatment, without drugs or surgery, can help the body use its own powerful self-healing abilities.”

  • Dr. Tory Schoonmaker completed his undergraduate degree in Colorado, where he met his wife, Brooke, and a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Parker University in Dallas. When he’s not helping patients, the dedicated father of six spends time with his family. With a well-rounded set of interests and hobbies, Dr. Tory enjoys computers and electronics, woodworking and making furniture (he hopes to one day make a baby grand piano “from scratch”), serving his church, being a Scout leader, and he has written a novel. He’s also an avid outdoorsman.

Dr. Tory says eight out of 10 people will suffer from back or neck pain at some point in their life. If you have been dealing with chronic neck or back pain, he and his team are here to make it easier for you, and aim to relieve your pain by addressing the source.

“We see a lot of people who have been enduring pain for years become pain-free with spinal decompression. It’s one of the most successful and well-proven nonsurgical, non-invasive back pain treatments available. In fact, the national average for successful outcomes from decompression is approximately 89 percent,” Dr. Tory said.

Simply put, spinal decompression relieves pain caused by herniated or bulging discs by allowing the damaged disc to naturally repair itself.

“Discs, which are located between the vertebrae, don’t have their own blood supply, so it takes time for them to heal. The inner core contains a loose network of fibers suspended in a mucoprotein gel that is comprised of around 80 to 86 percent water. Spinal decompression is like disc CPR. It allows them to rehydrate and regenerate over time, becoming healthy again,” Dr. Tory explained.

Freedom Wellness Center uses an FDA-cleared technology with state-of-the-art decompression tables that offer greater accuracy, better control, and better outcomes than ever before. Decompression treatment at Freedom Wellness Center takes around 30 minutes for the decompression session, and is coupled with spinal manipulation and rehabilitative treatment such as cold laser therapy and therapeutic massage.

“Studies show you need at least 23 minutes of decompression for the treatment to be effective,” Dr. Tory said. “If your decompression only takes 10 or 15 minutes, you can’t get optimal results.”

Since discs take time to heal, and because everyone’s body is different, Dr. Tory customizes each program to fit the unique needs of each patient; therefore, the number and type of treatments vary from case to case.

“Discs need to stay hydrated to function properly. In addition to decompression and other therapies, we educate patients about the lifestyle changes they can make to help discs stay healthy. For example, caffeine and smoking dehydrate and can make disc problems worse,” Dr. Tory said.

As part of their comprehensive service to relieve back and neck pain, Freedom Wellness Center offers therapeutic massage from a licensed therapist.

“This isn’t a ‘fluff and buff’ massage,” Dr. Tory said. “We use trigger point and deep massage targeted to relieve muscle spasm and tension, and other soft tissue strain.”

Freedom Wellness Center may also prescribe cold laser therapy during the first stages of decompression. Cold laser therapy or low level laser therapy (LLT) has demonstrated the ability to accelerate and enhance the body’s natural defense and repair, providing pain relief.

Dr. Tory is excited to announce Freedom Wellness Center is adding a new pain relief therapy to their arsenal, an acupuncture treatment called dry needling that uses a thin filament. “It stimulates the healing process of soft tissues and has proven to be a highly effective,” he commented.

The lower back is an intricate structure of interconnected and overlapping elements, including the spinal vertebrae, discs, tendons and muscles and other soft tissues. Dr. Tory uses spinal manipulation in conjunction with decompression to heal and reduce pain. “The success rates using the combination of decompression and chiropractic adjustments are impressive. Approximately 92 percent of patients treated reported improvement with spinal manipulation and decompression. Of these, 70 percent improved 75 to 100 percent.”

To achieve such high results, Dr. Tory has taken several extra courses to become the best. Setting himself apart, he is one of only a handful of doctors that are nationally certified to perform spinal decompression.

“You are what you eat!” Everyone has heard this old expression, but it rings true for all of us. The foods you put into your body can have a direct effect on your overall physical health. Eating healthfully not only makes you feel better, it can reduce high blood pressure, lower cholesterol, reverse type II diabetes, and much more.

Dr. Tory says that a healthy diet also involves your chiropractic health. That’s why Freedom Wellness Center offers friendly nutritional services to truly get you on track!
