As a girl, Patty Fleming learned what a difference orthodontics can make. “I had buck teeth as a kid,” she said. “After my braces, I felt more confident and was more outgoing.” Of course, she knows now that her teeth also functioned better after braces and were less likely to negatively affect her health, the way misaligned teeth can.
The daughter of a nurse, Patty always knew she wanted to work in healthcare. “I wanted to be in a profession of service,” she said. Now as an orthodontist, she meets shy, quiet kids like she herself had been and helps give them a smile they can feel good about. “After that, they’re little chatterboxes,” she laughed.
As a mother of three kids under age four, Dr. Fleming is performing the juggling act so many of us attempt. “It helps if you love what you do,” she said. “My husband is a dentist too, so we stay pretty busy. I also devote about ten hours a month to continuing education and study clubs where I discuss complex cases with other dentists and dental specialists. The rest of my time is devoted to the kids.”
Fleming Orthodontics is a bustling place with frequent classes and contests for patients, fun giveaways and monthly specials. Dr. Fleming is a bit of a techno-nerd and, as such, has amassed the very latest in orthodontic technology, including an Itero intraoral scanner and a 3-D printer with which she can construct in-house clear aligner therapy. She also has advanced training in orthognathic surgery.
“We live in an age when physical appearance is valued,” Dr. Fleming says. “An improved smile can boost your self-confidence and lead to greater success, in all areas of life. At Fleming Orthodontics, we combine clinical expertise with the most current orthodontic techniques. We make orthodontics simple, convenient, and affordable to provide beautiful smiles for all individuals from children to adults.”
Born and raised in Virginia, Dr. Fleming received her undergraduate degree in sports medicine from the University of Virginia and her dental degree, summa cum laude, from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. She is a member of prestigious dental honor societies including the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society, Gamma Pi Delta Prosthodontic Honor Society, and the Gorgas Odonatological Honorary Society.
Firm believers in giving back whenever they can, Dr. Fleming and her husband participate in dental missions, including providing pro bono dental work for individuals in local rehab programs. When not on the job, Dr. Fleming enjoys cooking, traveling, golf, yoga, and snowboarding with her husband.
Fleming Orthodontics accepts most major insurance and, when insurance isn’t available, offers in-house financing. They are now accepting new patients.
