Life experiences become catalysts for change and transformation, often when we least expect it. For Bryan Murphy — fitness industry expert and the former Gold’s Gym Houston owner — an “Aha!” moment inspired the beginning of a new path for himself and for his business.
Participating in a charity project in Guatemala sparked a deeper passion for helping others. Then, as he approached his 50s, Bryan and his wife, Kristi, adopted their foster son, Matteo. Wanting to be there for Matteo as he grows up and for his older children, Bryan started viewing the future through a new lens. He began to think about what truly motivates people to prioritize their fitness and wellness needs, and the framework for FITNESS PROJECT began to take shape.
“I think everyone has a Matteo in their life — something, someone, or some event that gives you a new purpose,” Bryan shares. “There’s power in purpose.”
Personal Fitness, Community, and Empowerment
Inspired, Bryan scrapped the old-school gym franchise business model and created ways for members to feel connected, crush their personal goals, and elevate the community. Every FITNESS PROJECT location contributes to community causes and charities. Each features a Project Wall that keeps members up-to-date, highlighting the organization’s supported and donation levels. QR codes are included for direct, discreet contributions. “We encourage everyone to participate in our community initiatives, but your involvement is completely your call,” Bryan explains.
Bryan further transformed the business model by doing away with salespeople. When you stop by to use your free pass or to check out FITNESS PROJECT, no one is going to try to sell you a membership. Then he took the next step and eliminated fitness managers.
“FITNESS PROJECT no longer draws a line between memberships and helping members learn how to use the equipment. Instead of using personal trainers and adding costs for members, we conduct a free member orientation that walks you through everything,” Bryan explains. “You’re empowered to make your own decisions at FITNESS PROJECT, including whether or not you want a personal trainer.”
Studio Team Training Reimagined
FITNESS PROJECT takes studio training to a whole new level. Small group classes taught by their best instructors and trainers focus on specific activities and parts of the body. The coached, programmed workouts are designed to maximize efficiency and deliver results while being motivated and supported by a group. Your personal results and activity are accurately monitored with MyZone, using innovative wireless technology.
Always evolving, FITNESS PROJECT recently expanded Studio Fitness with two new offerings—KettleRow and Tour10. KettleRow combines kettlebell flow sequences with rowing intervals and core stability exercises. Tour10 offers HIIT-style circuit training that features 10 different stations.
FP50 is a fun, challenging 50-minute cardio and strength training group class that rotates among different stations. It’s specifically designed to melt fat and build muscle.
FP Cycle features HIIT-style programming, motivational music, and real-time leaderboard technology to track progress. Also, be sure to try RPM and SPRINT.
