Farmers Insurance Deborah Toney

Deborah and her outstanding staff, Daphne Perkins, a licensed insurance agent who’s been with the firm for 15 years and Michael Work, another licensed agent in charge of marketing and sales. “They’re both outstanding in their efforts to care for our customers,” Deborah said.

Let’s face it. Insurance is confusing. That’s why Deborah Toney thinks of herself first and foremost as an educator. “Insurance isn’t black and white,” she said. “As your local Farmers Insurance agent, it’s my job—and my passion—to help you identify the insurance coverage that best fits your needs. Every client who walks through our door is different. There’s no one-size-fits-all insurance solution. I have the years in the business to help you better understand your coverage options, whether that’s auto, home, renters, business insurance, or something else. My team and I work to keep the process straightforward and personal. We want to empower you to be smarter about insurance, to understand what you’re getting and why.”

Deborah’s clients couldn’t be happier. Here’s what a few of them had to say.

“I’ve known Deborah Toney for over 18 years. She’s a consummate professional who works tirelessly to get us the best coverage at the best possible rates. Deb’s a been a member of the McKinney Chamber for over 20 years and a founding member of the Women’s Alliance of McKinney, the women’s division of the McKinney chamber. Every year since WAMs inception, she’s sponsored events with her time and her money. She deserves to be recognized as one of the women leaders in the McKinney community at large, as a member of the McKinney chamber and for her exceptional service to the women of our city.” – Debra K. Pope, CTC, CCC

“I first met Deb 20 years ago while working on the McKinney chamber directory and later served on the WAM board with her. Her involvement in the chamber and her community shows just how much she cares about giving back to the community where she runs her business. Always professional and knowledgeable regarding her business, she approaches service to our community with the same passion.” – Sue Clark

“Deb has done so much for McKinney, insurance, women, and me. She has a servant’s heart and anybody that knows her knows that. She’s led by example not only in the insurance world but in our community. I had the pleasure of working with her to start WAM. The mentoring committee was a perfect fit for Deb, then and now. I’m grateful she’s part of our great city.” – Abbie Andrews

Deborah began her work life in upper management at a large health insurance company. As a single mom, she raised her son while meeting the demands of corporate America for 21 years. Then Deborah decided she wanted a do-over. It’s admirable when anyone takes a leap of faith like that, but for Deb returning to school to work toward her MBA at age 44, was monumental. But she persisted and was soon recruited to sell insurance. “I thought, ‘I’m not a salesperson.’ I really didn’t think I could sell anything,” she said. “But I believe in the products so much and I guess that’s made a difference.”

Deborah did so well that, after just three years, she was ready to open her own office. A McKinney resident since 1996, she couldn’t think of anything she’d rather do that this in McKinney, helping her friends and neighbors as their insurance agent. “This is my 20th year with Farmers Insurance,” she said. “I’ve love being my own boss and love investing in the lives of my employees and their families. Farmer’s is a great company that really rewards hard work. They’ve done everything they can to help me build my business.”

The difference Deborah and her team offer their customers is personalized service. “When you call us, we answer the phone,” she said. “Our policyholders don’t want to talk to a machine, so we give them our personal cell phone numbers. They know if they need us they can reach us, even at night, on the weekend, or over a holiday. They can come to the office any weekday and we’re there. We live in this community. They know they’ll see us at the ballfield and at church. We know our clients and they know us.”

That’s why when the phone rings and it’s a new client, they’ve usually been recommended by an existing client. “We insurance multiple generations of many families,” Deborah said. “When a child grows up then calls us for their own insurance needs, because they know we took care of their parents—and maybe their grandparents—we know we’re doing what we set out to do.”

“Working to establish the Women’s Alliance of McKinney was a work of the heart,” she said. “We needed a forum within the chamber to give a voice to women, to promote and support women in business. Since 2005, we’ve grown to 200 members and it’s my blessing to be able to invest in their success.”

“My philosophy in life is to use the talents and resources God has given me to help others,” Deborah said. “I try to do this, whether it’s in my family or with a complete stranger. I’ve always had a heart for helping women, especially those who find themselves a single parent or someone looking for a second chance and just needing a hand up. In business, I find that if I always try to do what’s right for my customers, put their needs and concerns first, business success will follow.”

When not on the job, Deborah enjoys traveling abroad seeing new places and experiencing new cultures. She loves spending time with her grandchildren, Dylan and Garrett Work, and is so proud of the young men they’ve become. She’s an active member of First Baptist Church of McKinney and supports Shiloh Place, an organization that helps women get back on their feet, providing them with training and a living facility to help them return to the workforce.
