Although Fairview EyeCare, P.A. had limited hours for a few months early in 2020’s pandemic shutdown, Dr. Carey Patrick is still here providing family friendly eye care. Like many local businesses, Fairview EyeCare has updated cleaning, sanitizing and mask-wearing protocols in order to keep everyone safe and healthy. “We have also added convenient, social distance-friendly Curbside Pick-up and Telehealth Appointments to our suite of services”, confirms Dr. Patrick.
Dr. Patrick describes that at Fairview EyeCare, “Our job is to educate patients so they understand what’s going on with their vision and what can be done to make it better”. She wants to make sure that patients understand the “why” of their vision correction choices. “How can you make an informed decision without information?” she asks. “Also, I want patients to understand their eye health, which isn’t the same thing as vision.”
In this way, Dr. Patrick invites patients to be an integral part of their vision solution. “If patients understand why I recommend a particular contact lens, or particular way of cleaning those lenses, or how their individual needs are best treated by medication or vision therapy, then patients are more likely to follow their treatment instructions and get better and see better, faster” she described. “A healthy partnership between doctor and patient is key to achieve great vision and excellent eye health.”
Dr. Patrick reminds patients to realize their eyes were designed to last a lifetime and “if you treat them nicely, they will.” According to national guidelines, “children should see an eye doctor before their first birthday. That way, if there’s anything that might prevent the child from developing proper vision, we can catch it early, when it’s most treatable.” Because healthy eyes reflect overall body health, Dr. Patrick also speaks with her patients about nutrition choices that support healthy eyes, maintain clear adult vision, and prevent ocular diseases such as macular degeneration and cataracts.
Dr. Patrick served on the Board of Directors for the Allen-Fairview Chamber of Commerce for 11 years, including on both the health insurance and business advocacy committees. Five years ago, Governor Greg Abbott appointed Dr. Patrick to the Texas Optometry Board for a six year term. “I take this responsibility seriously and strive to hold myself to the highest standard of performance for my profession. We always put patients first, deliver high quality care and in this way set an example for my colleagues.” Dr. Patrick also serves as a leader in regional, state and national optometric professional associations.
