Growing up in Amarillo, Dr. Tracie Swayden always had her eye on two goals. As a star basketball player at Amarillo High School, one was that orange hoop at either end of the basketball court. Beyond basketball, as one who has always loved caring for others, her ultimate goal was to become a doctor.
After winning back-to-back 5A state championships, she received a full-ride basketball scholarship to the University of Texas. Upon completing her undergraduate studies, she earned her medical degree at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Dr. Swayden then completed an internship at Ft. Worth’s John Peter Smith Hospital, followed by a dermatology preceptorship to develop her knowledge and skill in that area of medical specialty.
For more than two decades, Dr. Swayden has practiced dermatology, primarily serving patients in Parker and Tarrant counties, and now operates two SkinMD clinics, one in Hurst, the other in Weatherford.
Challenges and Rewards
She readily admits that being both physician and owner/operator of two clinics is challenging. “I wear many hats and am pretty much on duty 24/7,” she says. Her responsibilities include constant communication with both patients and staff members, but she obviously loves what she does.
In particular, Dr. Swayden enjoys performing cosmetic procedures. “To me,” she says, “the face is a canvas, and I love the artistry of helping my patients improve their looks and feel better about themselves. The instant gratification that comes when they look in the mirror and see the transformation after a procedure is nothing short of amazing.”
Dr. Swayden has performed thousands of injectables including, Botox cosmetic, Dysport, Restylane, and Juvederm just to name a few.
Full Range of Dermatology Services
In addition to Dr. Swayden’s cosmetic work, her SkinMD clinics offer a full range of dermatology services, from a basic, full-body skin examination to the most advanced dermatology surgical procedures.
Assisting Dr. Swayden in providing this wide array of services are her associates, Edward Zabawski, Jr. DO, Yang Xia, MD, Mark Brooks, PA-C, Karen Sticka, PA-C, and Leonard Acevedo, PA-C.
Dr. Zabawski, a graduate of Duquesne University, received his medical degree from Ohio University and completed a dermatology residency at the Dallas-Ft. Worth Medical Center. In a medical career stretching over 20 years, he’s been involved in thousands of complex medical and surgical dermatology procedures.
Dr. Xia, a West Point graduate, received his medical degree at the Uniform Services University of Health Sciences and his dermatology training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Bethesda Naval Hospital. He also completed a Mohs surgery fellowship at the Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California, and has performed over 1,500 Mohs micrographic surgeries.
Excellence in Patient Care
Whatever the procedure, from a routine skin examination to the most advanced dermatology surgical procedures, at SkinMD, the emphasis is always on excellent patient care. “I know how difficult it can be to navigate the medical system,” says Dr. Swayden,“ and at our clinics, we try to make everything as smooth and welcoming for our patients as we possibly can.”
