Shruja Patel actually began her education in mechanical engineering before switching to medicine. Once she was settled in medical school, though, she realized it was a perfect fit for her. “I love family medicine,” she said. “I love meeting with people of all ages and addressing their wellness needs. No two days are the same for me and each of my patients is unique.”
Dr. Patel started her medical career in practice working in the ER (emergency room) where she gained invaluable experience. “I went to medical school in Lublin, Poland in the European Union and did my residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston serving a county clinic in an underserved area,” she said. “But in my heart, I wanted to return to the community in which I was raised and provide care to the people of Katy.”
Dr. Patel places an emphasis on coordinating care for her patients, providing them with a true medical home. “People are seeing multiple specialists, but the specialists aren’t always on the same page,” she said. “I know my patients well. I spend time getting to know them, not just their medical history but their lifestyle, diet, exercise habits, sleep patterns, and stressors. All these things affect health and wellness, and I try to partner with them in their lifelong journeys. If they do need to see a specialist, I want to help make that transition as smooth as possible. Then, I aim to stay informed of their care and follow peripherally.”
Dr. Patel advocates proactive and preventive care for her patients. “Let’s do the right things now, so we don’t have to address health issues down the line,” she said. “We want to act to keep you healthy, not react when there’s a problem.”
When not on the job, this Katy native enjoys working out at OrangeTheory Fitness and with her Peloton, dining out at the newest hot spots in the city, and spending time with her friends and family. She also dabbles in astronomy, interior design, dancing, cooking, hiking, and sports.
“My life philosophy is to be willing to try anything once,” she said. For her that “anything” was private practice. “I’m so glad I did,” she said. “In this day of big-box medical practices, it feels good to offer patients an alternative. When they come to see me, they know they’ll see me. The most important time I can spend with a patient is time just listening to them, hearing their concerns, and understanding their unique health challenges.”
