A visit to the dentist conjures an array of emotions and feelings for children, but fun isn’t usually their first thought. However, fun is exactly what Leslie Blackburn, D.D.S., M.A., promotes at the warm and inviting pediatric dentistry practice she now shares with veteran pediatric dentist Judith Ragsdale, D.D.S., M.S.D. “Our team makes it fun to come to work,” Dr. Blackburn said. “We laugh and have fun together and motivate each other to help our families have a wonderful experience.”

Beyond all the fun, Drs. Blackburn and Ragsdale thrive on making lasting connections with their patients, deepening those bonds and figuring out exactly how to cater to the special needs of each one. “I love working with children,” said Dr. Blackburn, who joined Dr. Ragsdale’s practice in September 2014. “I love learning the unique things about each child. It is not always easy for kiddos to articulate what they are afraid of, and so it is an art to help them figure it out and convey that so you can help them.”

Services:

  • Preventative dental care including patient counseling, fluoride treatments and sealants
  • Routine dental care including X-rays, cleanings, fillings, crowns and extractions
  • Emergency dental treatment
  • Including nitrous oxide, conscious sedation, IV sedation and outpatient general anesthesia

The partnership between Drs. Blackburn and Ragsdale was a match made in heaven as both share the same values and love for children, they both have very similar treatment philosophies and goals and both are on the same page when it comes to how to treat children. “For many years, I have searched for just the right person to help me in my practice,” said Dr. Ragsdale. “I feel strongly that I have found just that perfect person. She has a contagious smile and a joyful, enthusiastic personality. I am delighted to have found such a great lady to join me in my practice.”

The path to pediatric dentistry was not a straight one for Dr. Blackburn, but it was an important one. In college, she discovered a love of child psychology and understanding their needs at various stages and ages. She changed her major and pursued this field with great dedication. After working for some time at a rehab center in Utah for mothers with drug and alcohol problems and their children, she realized she could not leave work at work, which could be emotionally taxing at times. She then branched into other fields and applied for different programs and eventually found her way to pediatric dentistry, which totally clicked with her. After earning a Doctor of Dental Surgery and a Master of Science and Dental Education in 2012 from Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in New York, she finished up her education at Yale University and received her certificate in Pediatric Dentistry in 2014.

Dr. Blackburn is emphatically excited to be part of the community at The Woodlands Dental Group with Dr. Ragsdale and can’t say enough about how great and fulfilling this new venture is. “I love working with the team she has put together,” Dr. Blackburn said. “I cannot say enough about how wonderful they are both with the children and to work with as co-workers; it’s been a true pleasure.”

Dr. Blackburn said that she and Dr. Ragsdale are the perfect combination of a wonderful experience and the most recent training. “Dr. Ragsdale has decades of experience in pediatric dentistry, and I have just finished my final training, so I am up on all the current ideas and techniques,” she explained. “Together, we help each other practice optimal dentistry.”

Some of the ways they do this include the following:

  1. Committing every day to optimal, quality care
  2. Providing a fun, caring environment for everyone involved
  3. Chatting and developing lasting bonds with children and family members
  4. Understanding each patient’s needs

“From treatment planning (taking each child and family’s unique situation into account), to using all my fun toys to provide the best care for sick teeth, I love every aspect of dentistry,” Dr. Blackburn said. “It really is a fun job.”
