Some people become a physician because they are continuing a family legacy. Others enter medical school and discover their specialty during rotations. Dr. Douglas Won, a dual fellowship-trained, board-certified spine surgeon, doesn’t fit into these molds.

After his parents emigrated to the United States to make a better life for their family, Dr. Won’s hard-working father was told he needed back surgery. He underwent four separate operations in the 1980s, and suffered complications. One summer, while his father spent two months in the hospital, Dr. Won, a boy at the time, went there nearly every day to keep him company and help care for him.

“My dad’s back surgeries and watching him suffer from chronic pain motivated me to go into medicine and fueled my interest in spine surgery,” Dr. Won said. “He was in so much pain and, overall, he received poor care. Some doctors were compassionate, but I was shocked to find that many were not. I also saw my dad’s gruesome-looking incisions and was aghast. I knew there had to be a better way! I was determined to turn his bad experiences into something positive and help others escape the ordeal he went through.”

Nonsurgical Conservative Treatment, Multi-Disciplinary Approach

Fast forward to today, and Dr. Won has more than achieved what he vowed to accomplish as a youngster—“to find a better way.” Although he’s a board-certified spine surgeon, he says surgery isn’t always the best option. In fact, around 95 percent of his patients improve through nonsurgical treatment.

“Patients are in pain, and are often frustrated and fearful,” Dr. Won said. “Many have been seeking relief for years without success. I recall my father’s suffering and approach each patient with heartfelt understanding and compassion. We start with a full diagnostic evaluation to determine the source of the pain, then develop a customized treatment plan using a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach.

“Our pain management team and nonoperative spine specialists at Lumin Health SpineCARE offer many nonsurgical options to patients who don’t need or don’t wish to undergo surgery. Conservative, nonsurgical treatment can include chiropractic care, physical therapy, stem cell treatment, noninvasive pain management devices, acupuncture, and more.”

Specializing In Minimally Invasive Surgical Solutions

If conservative treatment methods fail, Dr. Won and the Lumin Health SpineCARE team look at surgery as an option, always striving for the least invasive, most effective surgical treatment. Their goal is to avoid traditional, open back and

neck fusion surgeries, using cutting-edge minimally invasive techniques.

“I saw what my dad went through, and now I know exactly what occurs during open spine surgery,” Dr. Won said. “To gain access to the spine, the surgeon must make a big incision and then strip the muscle off the spine causing significant trauma, bleeding, scarring and more pain. Also, they typically have to strip the muscle above and below the area. I know this sounds dramatic, but the vision that comes to my mind is a butcher working away on the muscle and bone!”

Beyond Mininimally Invasive—Lumini Micro-Invasive Surgery

Dedicated to continual improvement and always seeking “a better way,” Dr. Won constantly hones his skill in minimally invasive surgery. A pioneer in the field, he has developed new, minimally invasive surgical devices to treat spinal disorders and state-of-the-art minimally invasive spine surgery techniques, including Lumini Micro-Invasive Surgery, which he developed and patented.

“Lumini Micro-Invasive Surgery is the most advanced form of minimally invasive spine surgery,” Dr. Won explained. “Patients will not only have smaller incisions but will experience less blood loss, less soft tissue damage, less infection, less scarring, less post-surgical pain, faster recovery time and faster return to daily activities.”

Dr. Won points out that most patients who are candidates for spine surgery will be a candidate for Lumini Micro-Invasive Surgery, which is customized to meet each patient’s unique needs.

“There are over 20 different ways to approach Lumini Micro-Invasive Surgery,” he explained. “We tailor the procedure to the patients’ condition and needs, and they will recover much faster with reduced risks compared to traditional open back surgery.”

Dr. Won was also the first surgeon in Texas to perform endoscopic laser spine surgery with a 3mm incision. Using highly specialized micro-invasive instruments, he decompresses or stabilizes the spine, and relieves pressure on spinal nerves.

“The procedure is performed without general anesthesia, it doesn’t require stitches, and we use a BAND-AID to cover the tiny incisions instead of typical surgical dressing. The patient is able to walk out of the surgery center within a few hours and may return to work in just a few days,” Dr. Won explained.

“Don’t Just Accept What A Doctor Tells You. Get A Second Opinion.”

When it comes to treatment for back and neck pain, getting a second opinion is a wise decision. Dr. Won said there are many situations which should lead you to seek a second opinion before making any kind of decision. Your current doctor may say spine surgery is the only way to treat your pain, which could be a red flag, and especially if he or she only recommends traditional, open surgery. When minimally invasive surgery is offered, you should be aware that some surgeons limit themselves to only one approach. Or, perhaps you simply don’t feel comfortable with the doctor. Maybe he or she is vague about the reason for a proposed procedure and surgical plan and doesn’t take the time to answer your questions to your satisfaction.

“It’s up to you to decide when and if you’ll have surgery. A second opinion can give you new insight on treatment options and the confidence on how to proceed with your care,” Dr. Won said. “Patients put their trust in me. It’s my obligation to always do what’s in their best interest—what I would recommend for myself or a family member. We take time with patients to educate them and step through a range of options, from nonsurgical care to alternative minimally invasive surgical techniques.”
